My Savage died

Leclairk, now that the smoke has cleared and most have cooled down I will chime in a little. I was exactly where you were a few months back. I posted that my Savage Model 12 in 6mm BR died at 750 rounds. I posted photos and a lot of folks told me it was dirty and needed to be cleaned and it would be fine. Well it was dirty because I was not using the right solvents. I cleaned the hell out of it and posted photos. Everyone said it looked great. I took it out and shot a few three shot groups. By the fifth or six group it wasn't doing well at all. Ordered a Critorian from Northland and never looked back.

Glad to here you like the Criterian. I’m excited to shoot the gun. It’s such a comfortable gun and with the TBAC suppressor it’s so much fun to shoot. What most people don’t know is that I cleaned the hell out of that rifle, both with Sweets and then Boretech since the Sweets didn’t seem to be doing the trick. I’m sure I shot it hot and burned up the throat. Live and learn.

"full of copper fouling that he said you could never get out".

"When it was 6 months old I had to send it back to Savage because the chamber was so rusted I could barely open the bolt after I fired it. "

Evaluate your cleaning frequency and process. You will have throat erosion at 1500 rounds with a center fire rifle caliber. I would suspect that careful application of JB or Isso will remove most if not all of that copper. Purchasing and learning how to interpret what you see with a fiber optic bore scope will help you evaluate your cleaning methods which will be beneficial in the future regardless of which firearms you own.

I agree here...Before you start screwing that barrel off, give it good cleaning followed by a good polishing. I'm not completely sold on the fact that your 6.5CM is gone after 1500 rnds. And all it will cost you to make sure is a container of JB or Iosso. I'm also in agreement with others about your Smith's intensions. 1K for a new barrel completed is not where you need to be. If you have half-a-dog up on a DD Delta 5, then save the barrel cost and get yourself the DD. But not 1K on a barrel for the Savage. Sounds more like a Proctologist.

outsite. my doctor actually recommended that i change mine to a new pair in the middle of the day. Sounds like you are ahead of the game.

Got my gun back and used the Teslong scope I bought off Amazon to take a look for myself at the barrel in question. How’s it look? Seems like the throat shouldn’t be missing chunks of metal.

That isnt a missing chunk thats an added chunk (of gunk). That barrel is bad dirty
Really? I am not expert at knowing what a borescope is showing, but what are those 'lines' that go across the bore? And, those 'round' things?

If it were just the line of carbon in the corner of the goove, would that be considered 'really dirty'?
Thanks

I promise you that is not a chunk of gunk, there is a piece missing. It’s probably harder for you guys to see with the quality of the picture. Just for fun I will strip it down and see what’s what. One thing this borescope has shown me is that Boretech works much better than Sweets. I can really see the advantage of having a borescope for cleaning and for 40 bucks it’s well worth it!

If you mean this is the piece missing you can fill that in if you flushed carb cleaner down the barrel2621EFA6-D797-4CC7-8E21-976229D90F1B.jpeg
