My Savage died

I have a Savage Model 10 GRS in 6.5CM. Lately it has not been grouping well so I took it in for a checkup. Gunsmith says the throat is completely shot. It’s cracked, pitted, and full of copper fouling that he said you could never get out. The gun is only 2-1/2 years old and has seen maybe 1500 rounds. I could rebarrel the thing but at this point I’m tempted to just scrap it. Any idea what would cause this? This isn’t the first problem I’ve had with it. When it was 6 months old I had to send it back to Savage because the chamber was so rusted I could barely open the bolt after I fired it. It lives in a safe in a temperature control room with a dehumidifier in the safe. I’m tempted to contact Savage and see what they say, but given it’s well past the warranty period I am probably out of luck. I love the gun, it shot lights out until it didn’t. I’m lusting over the new Daniel Defense Delta 5 Pro. It might be time for an upgrade.

I hear you on a new barrel. My smith likes Douglas barrels. New barrel will run me about a $1000 installed. Or I buy a far superior Daniel Defense for $2500. I’m not sure what route to take.

Buy a pre-fit from one of the dealers, i.e. Ragged hole barrel, E.R. Brown or others, get a couple tools and install it yourself. Save yourself a lot of money. And from what you describe on the rust, etc. I would say clean your rifle's better when you get through shooting each time, before putting them away in the safe, even with the de-humidifier.

two or three points here:

1) i would not put a $1000 barrel on a savage, as much as i like them. last i looked you could pick up a krieger or bartlein for $500 or less. shaws are even cheaper.
2) personally theres no reason to even bring a smith into this equation, you can buy a prefit from several places as noted above and do it on your workbench. buy the tools so if/when you shoot out another barrel you can replace it at will.
3) douglas barrels arent worth the money imo. whens the last time you saw them on an equipment list? this is just one example, feel free to do your own research. https://precisionriflecomponents.com/top-barrel-manufacturers-in-local-prs-competition-2019/

theres also the idea that your smith is trying to make a boat payment and theres nothing really wrong with it. have you scoped the bore yourself?

That daniel defense goes for around $1500. Keep the savage. Youll be way better off. For $2500 you can buy a real nice good shooting custom rifle

Evaluate your cleaning frequency and process. You will have throat erosion at 1500 rounds with a center fire rifle caliber. I would suspect that careful application of JB or Isso will remove most if not all of that copper. Purchasing and learning how to interpret what you see with a fiber optic bore scope will help you evaluate your cleaning methods which will be beneficial in the future regardless of which firearms you own.

WTF--where are you? 90210?

however, if youre just sick of fooling with it, drop it in the mail and ship it to my ffl. ill make sure it gets a proper cleaning and a good home.

Criterion barrel from northland shooters supply and it will shoot again. Just put a 6cm together and shot a .212 5 shot group last week at 100 yds.
