Shooter's Choice Expires?

I wouldn't buy a gallon then!

If the smell still burns your nose hairs clean off, use it. If it's gone mild, then it has lost its strength from degradation and using it would not be beneficial. Your mileage may vary...

Just bought a gallon of Shooter's Choice and it says on the container to use within one year. Why?

Not sure if this will answer the question but it might be related. Where I work, we store a large quantity of firearm cleaning and lubricating liquids. We get get quarterly notice and no-notice inspections from both state and federal environmental compliance inspectors. Their concern with expiration dates on these liquids is that the container that houses them (plastic jugs mostly) can still effectively contain the liquid. Some of our solvents are past their expiration dates but the containers are still like new. To be in compliance, I extend the expiration date by 2 years (on the proper forms of course) and the inspectors have never had an issue with that.

In your case, the shelf life might be related to the container and not the solvent.

I have used Shooters Choice MC-7 since the late 80's. I don't buy it by the gallon, I don't even buy whiskey that way....but I can tell you that some of mine has gone 3 years and it smells, looks and works no different. All of it that I have ever used was/is in a glass container.

the no notice inspections from the communists is one of the main reasons industry will never come back to the US unless these people are severely dealt with
as far as a solvent expiring who knows how long it sat on a stores shelf

With the period of back order time on this product, I do not think it sits very long. I buy a gallon because a 16 ounce bottle at your local retail store is about $25. A 16 ounce by the gallon is about $8. I put it in old 16 ounce solvent bottles. I did have a metal gallon that it comes in leak once.

Hard to tell if an expiration date is real or not. They put expiration dates on everything because so many will throw it out and buy more. Great way to increase sales. For example, salt. Salt never changes. It will be NaCl for 1,000,000 years. If it gets wet, it will get clumpy. The package may fall apart eventually.

Now milk will spoil and having a date on it is useful to judge how old it is.

Most things are somewhere in between and it's up to you to figure it out.

Foods that I routinely eat after expiration include yogurt, cream cheese, packaged meats, and vitamins. I find bread molds much less than it used to. Age a bagel this morning well over a month old (because I ran out of my preferred brand).

I hate to "rain on your parade" so to speak but you may find it worthwhile.

I used Shooter's Choice for over 30 years and I thought it was doing a great job. A few years back my wife developed a sensitivity to the smell so I searched for an alternative that was odorless.

I tried Bore Tech products only because they were odorless. I was shocked by the results. First, their Carbon Remover, C4, did a superior job judging by the condition of the patches. But it was their Copper Remover, CU+2, that really impressed me. It did a far better job of removing copper than Shooter's Choice.

You may want to try a small bottle of each and judge for yourself but my guess is that you'll use the gallon of Shooter's Choice as an outside insect remedy and switch to Bore Tech products for cleaning your rifles.

PS: I use the Bore Tech two part system, i.e. Carbon Remover, C4, first with a bronze brush then after dry patching I apply the Copper Remover.

I recently switched to the Boretech products and have had the same experience

Must be a new discovery. Never said that before.
Centershot,
I just noticed you used to work on F-4s. Phantoms? I was in the Marines and was a avionics tech. I worked on F-4J and S models in the late 70s into the early 80s. I worked on the gear after it failed and was pulled out of the aircraft. I worked mostly on the CADCs.
