Anybody ever had to have a resizing die ground shorter?

Try annealing the case shoulders occasionally. Work hardened brass will not shed that last 0.002" easily.

The thread is just over 2 years old. Any reason for the resurrection? Looks like we pretty much beat the subject to death a few years ago. :)

Now your dies can set the shoulder back an excessive amount if you or another reloader uses those dies with the standard procedure. So you have the potential for a different problem now.

Couldn't you have the same problem with a ground off shellholder if you didn't keep good track of it?

S/H's are $5 -$10. Paint the modified one and keep it with the die. Redding S/H's are hardened so I always use another brand to modify.

I have cut dies & shellholders,.doesn't matter how hard they are. I cut them in a lathe, use borazon tooling.

I have had that problem and I have ground little of shell holder lot easier and safer than cutting die . Later I found a shell holder that would work, different brand

You have to be careful with that because if you take too much off the bottom of the die you can lose proper sizing on the base of the case. Which may already be the situation with the die not going low enough. Better to take it off the shell holder and allow the die to size the entire case body as it was designed.
Besides everything mention it is cheaper and much easier to replace the shell holder if you screw it up also if you just try shell holders from different manufacturers you may find it will solve the problem they vary quite a bit

When I was working I had access to a complete proto-typing machine shop. While I was not a machinist I had the pleasure of working with some of the best and made it a point to treat those guys well. Wasn't unusual to see me walking into the plant a few hours early with a barrel blank and receiver. :) Unfortunately those days ended just as all good things come to an end when at 63 I retired happily. So went some of the best gauging money could buy. :( On the bright side range days are no longer limited to weekends. :)

My point here is while it's nice to have a good precision lathe or bench grinder or even a milling machine not everyone is afforded those goodies in their basement or garage. This is where suggestions like how to hand lap a few thousandths off a shell holder come in handy. Using a good flat surface and taping emery paper down and how to make figure 8s with the work piece.

I’ve never had that issue but dies are not cut the same , even from the same manufacturer. I use Redding competition shell holders and with my standard bushing die I use the #6 shell holder . However with the small base bushing die ( same manufacturer) I use the #4 shell holder to get the same bump . It just is what it is I guess . I do agree with others that took some off the shell holder instead of the die .

Any chance you checked the shell holder to be sure that was not the problem ? Off the top of my head I think the standard shell holder deck hight is .125 ???

EDIT
Oh crap I got sucked into another years old thread :-(

I have found some issues with my FL resizing die from RCBS. No matter how I set the die I cannot ever get it to bump the shoulder back to where I want it. My fired brass comes out at 1.622 as measured with the Hornady comparator. I have been fighting this die to push back to 1.620 and it will not happen even if the die is screwed down so far it locks up the press at 3/4 stroke. I finally had a friend grind the bottom of the die off by .020 and that did the trick. I can now go well beyond 1.620 with ease. This don't seem normal to me??

Take it off of the shell holder Only. The dies are made to specs which will work (generally) for all of the chambered barrels you will own over your lifetime. Take it off the die and you will need to be really careful with any other chamber. Shell holders are expendable if not working on another.
