PNC Bank - No Gun Transactions

Dave Berg

What doesn't kill us makes us bitter.

Very long story made somewhat shorter, my three PNC Bank checking accounts were compromised and eventually locked. I noticed the fraudulent withdrawal and called them in late May. Took them four days to do anything and once they did the accounts were locked - couldn't take any money out. Yesterday I was on the phone setting up a meeting with a nice, helpful young lady and during the discussion she asked me if I had made the five recent mobile deposits which I had. Meeting set for Thursday morning.

Another young lady called me this morning, Wednesday, to confirm the meeting and said it appeared that some of the transactions were for guns. Also that they do not permit gun transactions using their accounts and if that was my intent they would give me a cashiers check for the combined balances - implying that I could take my business elsewhere. These combined checking accounts totaled quite a bit of money. I would think they would very much want to keep me as a customer but apparently not.

How did they figure it out? One of my buyers on Gunbroker sent a cashiers check and in the Memo field he had written Tikka T3 NIB. That was one of the mobile deposits and is the only way I can think of.

Here, in the middle of conservative, rural, Trump country PA you can't use a PNC checking account to buy or sell a gun? Might tell her I want it in cash and bury it out back...

Update: I met with the customer service rep, nice lady, who told me I'd have to close the existing accounts and open new ones. I said I wasn't interested in doing that because of PNC's policy regarding firearms. She never even paused and asked me what I'd like to do with the funds. The best solution she offered was to wire the money to accounts I have in Florida. Took her a while, maybe 45 minutes, but when she was done the money was in the Florida accounts according to my phone.

Then the assistant manager, the woman who called and gave me the no guns lecture, came in and asked if there were any questions. I asked about the no guns policy and specifically some possible transactions.

1 - Could my daughter, also a PNC customer, write a check to purchase a gun?
A. Yes if it was a personal account.

2 - Could she sell the gun and deposit the check in her PNC account?
A. No, not a personal account. They audit the checks and if they think the payment was for a firearm they will close the account.

3- What about a business account?
A. We do not offer business accounts to firearms related businesses.

4- Do you, representing PNC, realize that many gun owners would not do business with you if they knew of your no firearms policy?
A. PNC realized when they established this policy that there was a downside risk but that there was a greater exposure from dealing with people who buy and sell guns especially online.

5 - Can you show me where all this is documented? I would think that if I opened an account here, which would be closed if I deposited a check from a firearm sale, that information should be disclosed before you took my money.
A. It's in the rules and regulations somewhere.

I left feeling unfulfilled.....

Keep in mind this was from a somewhat ditzy young new assistant branch manager so I don't know if it's like this for all of PNC.

Be careful if you move the money to a different bank and open a "new" account they may tie your money up for a good amount of time before allowing you to access the funds.

You may want to split your funds up between a couple of banks to spread the risk of fraud or bank policies.

I bought an AR10 from Tombstone Tactical about 2 years ago and had them charge 30 dollars more than the agreed upon price. It was bought with a PNC credit card and PNC paid me 25 of the 30 cause of the dispute. This and several other accounts I had with another bank when PNC bought them out. I called as soon as I read this but the lobby was already closed. I will be calling first thing in the morning.

I know you are addressing Dave Berg but calling the NRA will get you on a list that will result in you being called 4 or 5 times a week and asked for more money. Give them some more money and they will call more. I wouldn't mind sending them some money but I think the La Pierre's have enough fancy clothes,

PNC, which I dropped for other reasons, Bank Of America and Paypal are three if the most communist, anti gun, anti America, anti republican liberal democrat run businesses in this country. You would have to deal with an outfit like Target to get one as bad as these three....yet so many gun guys insist on dealing with them and making sure they prosper. I don't want to see anything anti gun prosper.
PNC bought out our local bank I dealt with for years. Now, everything takes 3 days to get an answer or decision on because it has to go to PNC headquarters.
The answer is not don't write it on the check or transaction that it's a gun, the answer is find a real bank!!!

Use cash. Send it signature required. I have lost my faith in banks, and I do not care for PayPal. Purchasing a MO is a bunch o crap, and everyone wants to know what you are purchasing with it.

They don't want you to send cash because they can't track it, or get a part of it.

If you don't have some coin buried in the back 40, you take the chance of loosing everything you THINK you have in the bank.

When I had my gun business I used a local credit union. When we opened the account we specifically asked about their policy on firearms and gunsmithing activities and they were cool with it. I never had a problem. Authorize.com was my credit card processor also, cost more but is firearms friendly.

My experience with a credit union was far less favorable. I had a business account with a CU that I have belonged to for decades. They were simply not set up to handle check payments in any volume. Granted, this has been several years and checks were used much more frequently then. Ultimately I closed that account and opened one with a local bank.

I've looked for businesses that are proud to be gun friendly and can't find many. Seems like an obvious niche that would bring in a lot of business. Let the snowflakes take their business elsewhere.

If every conservative in the US watched where he spent every penny, deleted all social media accounts, and canceled their cable TV and papers; the whole liberal agenda would slam into a brick wall. Broken propaganda machine.
That would definitely work if we would all get together and do it at once but that will never happen unfortunately it’s the same with gas if everyone would not buy any gas for a week it would be a dollar a gallon or less

Dave Berg,

My response would be to use my current accounts as I always have (out of spite) while I setup new accounts at another bank. Transfer money to the new accounts in a way that is most beneficial to me (not PNC Bank).
Don’t be forced into a false choice of no guns or close the accounts now.
