Remington 700 30-06 build

Hey guys, just thought i would share a recent build. I haven't posted much on the forum but i have a lot more time to do so now...... so anyway.. I had a remington 700 "m40 long range" that was chambered in 30-06. i had an extra rock creek .30 cal barrel around the house that was 10 twist and deep fluted. I recently about 6 months ago set up my lathe in my shop to be able to re-barrel my own rifles. I'm not an expert in any way, been a machinist about 13 years and just having fun in the garage.

i went back with 30-06 as its kinda old school and different. I had dies, and loading supply's ,ect. so I thought why not.

After chambering, I put it together and headed to the range with factory Federal GMM 168. i shot several 1/2 inch groups at 100 yards, showed good promise for only about 25 rounds fired. didn't have time to take it out any further as i got out to the range a little late. i was mainly checking for feed and function as this is only the 3rd rifle i have done myself. i still plan to have the barreled action cerekoted OD green and the bolt in black, i also bought an EGW oversized knob i plan to install when my bolt fixture arrives from PTG.

anyhow, here are the specs

- remington 700 long action
-rock creek MTU contour barrel 24 inches finished chambered in 30-06, with just a standard ptg sammi spec reamer.
-badger .312 lug
-ORYX chassis
-timney calvin elite trigger
-burris xtr 2 4-20x50 FFP MOA
-vortex PMR rings 34mm
**soon will be cerekote od green and threaded 5/8-24, and oversized EGW knob.

Thanks for looking guys, really enjoying barreling my own. I learn a lot each time I do one!

Looks good. The 30-06 is not the glamour gal on the block but she don't need a paper bag over her head either. If I could only have one rifle it would be a 30-06. It was the first high power caliber rifle I ever had. Worked my butt off mowing yards, hauling hay and working in tobacco and anything else to make a dime for a year to save up $45 when I was 12 years old. Dad and I went to a local big box store that always had a shopping cart full of surplus military rifles for $25 to $30. Mostly were Mauser 7 or 8MM. That day there were rifles in boxes with a price of $40 marked on them. Dad, a WWII vet, pulled a rifle out of the box and said "this is what you want." It was a UNISSUED Remington made 1903A3 Springfield. That thing kicked like a mule but I learned how to really shoot longer ranges and judge yardage pretty well out to around 500 yards. I had a cousin that was in the National Guard and every month when he went to muster he brought me a can of ammo which was mostly AP black tip. It shot really well.

I shoot nothing but the 3006 in F Class open. With that barrel, try shooting a 190 grn Berger VLD over 51.5 grains of IMR 4350. The 190 and the 30-06 are like peas and carrots...they just go together to form that perfect combo. I have owned two 30-06 riles that are suped up...the first being a Remington 700, blue printed, with a 30" drop in Criterion barrel. I just had this one completed and I really have not had the time to play with it. However, my second is a Kelbleys Atlas tactical, with a 26" Proof Research dropped into an XLR Industries Element chassis. The buffer tube has a mercury filled recoil reducer to help tame the kick, although...its about the same as a 308 win. WHen I put the Fat Bastard mb on....all of that is gone. Both barrels were finish reamed using the PT&G Serengeti match reamer. This rifles consistently hammers and I love shooting it. I actually missed HM in midrange buy less than 1% last year, primarily using this rifle. 168s are a great bullet too...for that I go back to using H4895. I have shot extremely well with that bullet, but I like the higher BC in a 190 VLD and that weight not getting bullied as much by the wind.

Too me, nothing says anything abut the 30-06 other than it is still very relevant and a logical choice . If you do your part with case prep, attention to detail when loading and using the right bullet selection....you will not go wrong. I like it when I show up at F class matches and people ask me what cartridge I am shooting....when I answer 30-06...they look at me like I have 3 eyes and I am crazy.

I really wish you the best of luck and I am glad to see your choice you made. I am very confident that you will have a tack driver if you do your part.

Congrats,

Mike Conroy

Thanks for the reply’s guys! I have two .260rems I built first. I’m actually gonna thread the muzzle on the 30-06 build today and install a brake.

Also gonna load up a few handloads to try, gonna head out and see what I can find available in .30 cal bullets. I’d like to try the 190 as mentioned above. I have both powders mentioned above on hand.

Appreciate you guys looking!

I've been shooting 2 of my 30-06 rifles at 1000 yards that I had built for heavy bullets. One has a chamber set up for 210 SMK bullets and the other has a chamber for 215 Berger. Both shoot really good with those bullets but for fun I switch to 155 palma and shoot those. They shoot as good or better at 500 yards. Only the wind will hold them back compared to the heavy weights. That's the beauty of the 30-06. The old gal will shoot just about any weight if you take the time to figure out what she likes then give her the right load. I started with 190 SMK bullets loaded with 52.5grs of IMR 4350 when I first started reloading. That load won many matches at Camp Perry back in the day.

Great reads! I just picked up my first 30-06 from the gunsmith. Now I have to wait for the stock to get here. In around 1979 I owned a 30-06 for about 4 days before I sold it. Never even shot it. So, a few months ago I made the call for my first real 30-06. I can hardly wait to shoot it. I'll be using Hammer bullets. I hope the barrel likes them.

I built a 30-06 bench rifle and it shoots great. Been very happy with it but had to many sitting around and friend I shoot with offered to buy it so I sold it to him and hes been doing the best he ever has with it shooting our groundhog matches. I miss it and probably will build another.

My recent overhaul of my 06' is almost done.
Had .170 freebore done for shooting 200gr bullets.
It still needs ceracoat on the metal work.
McMillan edge fill stock is getting a custom
wood grain paint job. I know a guy for the paint work.

Awesome guys! Glad to see I’m not the only one fooling with the old 30-06.

shot a few handloads today with a buddy’s load with 165sst and h4350 shot some really nice groups around 3/8moa center to center. Gonna work up some loads this week and I’ll post up some pics of some groups good or bad.
Thanks for looking agin guys.

Well, I got a pleasant surprise yesterday. The stock for my 30-06 got here about 4 days before expected. Needless to say, I was at the range 3 hours later. I loaded up 20 rounds of 150 gr Sierra's. I used 57.0 grains of IMR 4350. I set my powder measure to dispense powder close to the 57.0 grs. If it dumped a load close to 57.0 grs. (I didn't mess with trickling/removing powder) I let it go. I shot and cleaned after each round for 3 shots. Then I cleaned after every 2 rounds. Anyway, after adjusting the scope and the cleaning routine was done my last 4 rounds gave me a nice cluster at a smidgen under .750. I hope that with a more accurate powder charge and Hammer bullets at 166 grs. this baby is going to be just what I was looking for. Now for the not so great...The stock I ordered is an H-S stock. After installing the action I noticed I had more barrel gap on one side than the other. Bummer. I had to sand some just forward of the lug area just to get the action to fit. So, that cancels out returning it. I know, I probably should have just boxed it back up and returned it. Any suggestions on fixing the problem?

@nmkid sand the skinny side to open channel until it looks even and more Esthetically pleasing and paint it.

Several years ago,, I walked into a pawn shop and saw an old Remington, $199. It turned out to be a 721 in 30-06.

Figuring ay Remington was worth $199, I bought it.

I got on Remingtons archives and the barrel code showed it was built the year I was born, 1949.

So, it became a project.

I trued the action. All of that stuff about older Remingtons being true is bunk. This thing was terrible. But I got it in tip top shape. I bushed the rear of the bolt body to give it a better fit in the action body.

I bought a new HS Precision stock, and skim bedded the action to the aluminum bedding block. I bought a BDL Stainless bottom Metal set from Pacific Precision.

The barrel is a 26 inch long fluted Krieger in Remington Varmint Taper profile, 1 in 9 twist, chambered in minimum spec 30-06

The scope is a NXS Nightforce 8-32, mounted on Nightforce rings and bases. The trigger is a Jewel Varmint, set at about 1 pound.

Had the action, rings, and bases Parkerized.

The thing really shoots great. A few week ends ago, we were at the range where I wanted to try some Reloader 16 with the Berger 168 hybrid match.

It shot great, with several “mid three” groups.

The ‘06 might be old, but it’s still a great round.

The 30.06 is certainly not a bench rest darling today but I have 4 all military sporterized except the Garand, 1 Remington 1917, a Remington and a Springfield 03. My son has one, a sporterized Smith Carona 03A3.

Three of the 4 bolt guns can shoot sub 1" groups with their pet load, with the 1917 I can't seem to break better than 1". All of those loads are in the 90%+ power range with 165 grain or 180 grain bulletts. One, at 3,100 FPS is certainly a max load with 165 grain bullet. In the field what more can you want.

With good rifles I've seen guys shooting 1/2" groups with hunting loads.
