Tikka actions

O I have no doubt PTG lug didn't fit. I have my own horror stories about them.
Glad to hear yours work great. Seems more and more Tikka aftermarket products showing up.
I also will be bringing another option or 2 to the table. Just a bit more time, more like machine time.

Thanks. Even still, its a good deal. 500-600 for and action, trigger, and mag parts. They are such sweet platforms to build light hunting rifles on. Ideal for the saum/wsm.
I’m no expert but all the tikkas I have built off for family have all shot just as good as my Custom R700 clones.
I always put a test bar through the actions and double check the runout on the face and most of them are darn close already, however as they have a different ignition design than the R700 what’s your thoughts on how they are from the factory Alex? Do you do any “accurizing” of the action before building on them for general hunting rifles?

On the Mountain Tactical website, they make some weird correlation between chamber psi, and recoil lug tensile strength. I hate marketing bs.

mountain tactical sells the lugs. they are made of 17-4 ph h900 stainless steel 200,000 psi strong.

Hard and strong, but it will crack like glass if it fails. H1100 or H1150 would be much more appropriate here, or even just 316 or 416. I would prefer more notch toughness with it placed in bending and shear during recoil.

There are 8 different grades of 17-4 (630) SST per the ASTM (A564/A564M) standard, which varies more than 85ksi in tensile strength. Just like with 4130/4340, the 17-4 alloy designation alone is not a sufficient basis for comparison, you need the heat treat/age/grade. Now, does an action manufacturer specify ASTM or a unique material spec? Who knows, but putting just "17-4" out there like it means something is like putting "SST" on a knife blade.

Dusty - I think you hit the nail on the head. It is overkill for the application, especially if it is bedded. If you have enough recoil impulse in the Tikka lug to deform an AL or CS bar, you have bigger problems.

This threads a few years old but I still do build on them for a few guys. I also like to remove the taper and use a normal lug. Makes for a better bedding job imo.

Alex,
How ya been sir?....
I wanna use one of my 7-08 t3s as a diner for a 6brx or 6 creedmoor I haven’t decided which yet but what’s the thread pitch on the Tikka?

Hi Wayne, they are 16 tpi.

Thank you Alex I thought that’s what it was but not 100% and Paul thought they might be metric , he can’t cut metric so I was worried as I really wanted him to do my smithing.
Hope we get to hook up at Deepcreek this year but not looking to good.

I think everything will be back to normal at our next match. Come on out.

I’ll call Tom and get the Dates thank you Alex! I’ll probably still be shooting that old Lawton chambered in brx I never have worked up a load for that 6brdx that Leo built me! And haven’t built a bra yet but I’ll still have fun no matter.
