If you've been following the UK situation you'll have heard our health secretary say that 3.5M antigen test kits are on order and that widescale immunity testing will be in use in weeks with simple finger-prick home test + post the [whatever] that holds a blood trace to a lab.

That was last week and I had sincere doubts given what I heard elsewhere. Now it turns out that there is no reliable antigen test, so there is nothing yet to order. (An option to buy has been placed once a reliable system turns up, but that may well be later rather than sooner.) We keep being fed fairytales over here. Whether such a simple to use finger-prick home test is really feasible has also yet to be proven so this may be another over-simplistic 'jam tomorrow solution' to stop the children worrying.

There is a small but growing groundswell of opinion here outside of government that almost everybody is going to catch Covid-19 eventually (short of a vaccine appearing much, much earlier than anybody now believes) and that it's an 80/20 problem. Restrictions should be lifted completely once the present peak of hospital admissions is over on the 80% whose risk of serious illness or death arising from infection is very low. The 20% are all over-70s and those of any age with serious health conditions that make infection dangerous. In the view of some of this approach's supporters there would be enforced 100% isolation for members of this group (which includes me on age grounds) for as 'long as it takes' or until an effective vaccine arrives. I suspect that some form of this approach, not as drastic as complete isolation for the 20% though, will become the exit strategy in western countries.
I totally agree with your last paragraph. I wish someone here would appoint a blue ribbon panel of doctors, scientists, businessmen, state and local officials, etc. to begin crafting an exit strategy, but at this time I don’t think one exists.

They are now being formed in Europe. A bit early for the US. The obese, type II diabetes, high blood pressure, arthritic, poor diet, no exercise lady hasn't cleared her throat yet.

SGK, there's been a few of your posts that I didn't much like, but this aint one of em. :p jd

Such is the ebb and flow of things. Now I think markets are getting ahead of themselves. Spain has been in complete national lockdown for four weeks and has at least another three weeks to go. There's still no national lockdown in the US and even states with a lockdown seem to have poor enforcement. We will likely just see other parts of the US play catchup to NY (Louisiana for example). While a few states don't have the disadvantage of high population density, they are often disadvantaged by a lack of healthcare facilities. This thing is likely going to roll along for another 12 months or more and I'd expect the US to suffer disproportionately. I hope medical infrastructure is rapidly moved around the country to places of peak need but I doubt there's enough coordination for that.

Good god. Why do you follow that crap? What a bunch of ultra rightwing nutters. You only need to read the first few comments to understand how screwed up those people are.

I agree the market is ahead of itself. I bought some at the lows, but have a large wad that I built up in January that I need to put to work.

Very concerned with appropriate valuation given the likelihood of a significant corporate and individual tax hike in the cards in 2021. Couple that with the likelihood of the tsunami of re-regulation and new regulation and an L shaped recovery is assured.

So guys, if I said I think my wife and I already had this in early Jan. through early Feb., before to much was being said, would I be laughed out of the room? I wish someone here would do a test to see if we had antibodies, they are to busy testing to see if you currently have it. We were both awful sick, my partner at the store was sick. Couple days of sniffles and boom, lung city. Hung on for a while. I still ended up on an antibiotic due to a sinus infection. Coughed forever, tight chest. I am 55, my BP is under control through meds and I take a statin, like most guys my age. Still active, still strong. I don't know. Sickest I've been in a while.
I know several people, some in my family, who had fever, cough, respiratory distress in the last few weeks. They all tested negative for Covid-19.

My brothers boss got it. I know him. He treats our family very well. Takes care of our youngest brother with employment opportunities even though he doesn’t deserve it.

Anyway, He was a walking case of what not to do. 60, smoker, traveled from the middle of March till about the 26th. Was in California, Las Vegas, New York, and New Jersey for business meetings. Of course he’s based out of Atlanta to add insult to injury.

He had the typical symptoms as soon as he got home. Fever, achy joints, congestion. Then he woke up one night not being able to breath. Went to the hospital. As soon as he went on the ventilator it was up and down. One day he was fine, talking, next day his family is being told to get his affairs in order. He finally pulled through and was taken off the ventilator. They tested him 3 days in a row and he finally tested negative today for it. They are sending him home tomorrow.

The whole ordeal was about ~16 days. I’m sure he’s probably not feeling 100% right now. Probably be a couple of months before he’s back to normal.

Anyway, it’s out there. It’s real. Everyone please be safe. Especially you old geezers. I need your posts to make sure I don’t blow up my guns or shoot anyone. This is the closets it’s hit home so far. I don’t want it any closer.

A very bright 17 y/o in Washington State devised a program to track Covid-19 cases worldwide. He did this back in December. It's updated hourly automatically, and you can see the cases and deaths rise in real time all around the globe. You can check any country as well as each US State. Anything you hear like we've reached a peak is pure B.S. All the US graphs are as vertical as a Space-X rocket launch.

Of course we haven’t peaked. How can you peak when there are people with the sniffles attributing it to seasonal allergies spreading this crap.

Separate thought. Not related to your post. Just me complaining. China does not have this under control at all. Any country without a free news / open information source as the US I do not trust...so practically every country.

A week ago The Atlantic published something I never expected them to put their name in front of:

https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2020/04/consider-possibility-trump-right-china/609493/

And now I read that Bill Maher’s taking a lean to the right over advocates for PC denial?

https://www.foxnews.com/entertainme...ronavirus-chinese-virus-we-should-blame-china

I’ve been hoping I’d wake up tomorrow only to discover this whole pandemic thing is a hoax to dump Trump ‘cause he’s been ‘stepping on sensitive toes’ ever since he announced he was running for President five years ago.

I’m convinced it’s not a hoax though, that’s clear enough at this point.

What’s also clear enough is the hatred directed towards our President on the part of too many of our elected politicians (unlike anything we experienced over the last occupant of the White House) being inflamed by much of mainstream media both here and elsewhere.

I absolutely believe you had it. My wife and I had the same symptoms as Covid-19 in early Jan. My wife was hospitalized and it took over a month to return to normal. The doctors determined it wasn't the flu but didn't determine the cause.

I had a weird 'something for ten days in January. Not quite flu, but enough to make me check in with ER at noon on Friday after five days' feeling dizzy, moderate dry cough. ER said nothing unusual, just take it easy.

So I went back to work, then just slept thru Saturday, Sunday, Monday. Felt a little better on Tuesday, still a bit of a cough, but went back to work on Wednesday. No fever, no aches or pains, just dead-tired for three days. Nothing I've ever had before was in any way at all similar... just sayin.

I have several friends and family who have had bad flu symptoms in the past two months, were tested, and did not have Coronavirus. I not only do not know any victims personally, I do not even know anyone who knows a victim. But I do know many people who have had the flu most of us get a vaccination against every year. There are still conventional flu and other viruses active, notwithstanding the 24/7 breathless coverage of this particular novel virus. As of a little over 3 weeks ago, there were 36 million conventional flu cases in the U.S., with 370,000 hospitalizations and 22,000 deaths. In the larger context of 330 million citizens, the chances lean more towards not having had Covid-19 than having had it.

You're describing exactly what I had, even the time frame, duration and severity. My wife on the other hand had a much more severe case and was hospitalized. If we had it the good news is we possibly have an immunity to it now. Glad you're well now.
