Honing an action instead of reaming.

THANK YOU ! This is the exact real world experience I was looking for. You did it. Learned that for you it wasn’t worth the effort for the results. Much appreciated !
Just for your knowledge I simply held onto the action body and stroked it over the hone mandrel as any other piece I would’ve honed. Lapping is a good idea in theory but the Remington action is so weak the lap mandrel flexes the action body as it’s pushed from one end of the action to the other. Once again, all current custom actions check all the tolerance boxes. Considering this is for your knowledge by all means try, experiment and learn.

bolts 1.JPG bolts 1.JPG reciever1.JPG You are not removing enough per pass lapping to make the action warp. if you try to take .0005 at a time lapping you will probably end up sticking the lap or with stitches where it grabbed and tore the hell out of your hand....Just for the record I have lapped all actions I have made maybe 30 or so and checked them with a mandrel ground between centers to check for straightness , used as a full length plug gage after being sized to a 2 " gage pin....the mandrel must be the same size as gage pin and slide through otherwise part is warped....These are a few that are not finished yet....And yes they where wire edm'd first.....

I wasn’t swiping at the lapping knowledge and usefulness for you to use lapping as your means to achieve final size and straightness. Simply stating that in the two Remington actions I made lap mandrels for there was too much misalignment from the front contact area to the rear contact for lapping to work in aligning the two spots. Therefore I used my hone to achieve the bore straightness I was looking for.

This is confusing as lapps are adjustable and not solid. you set them at a larger size and then grind them to correct size . then adjust smaller and start to lap adjusting up until you reach size and finish. years ago I got some of Jim Farleys cast receiver blanks they were rough and warped BAD I lapped them the same way.....Did you grind a mandrel same size as pins to see if hole was straight when done....

I’m not gonna respond purely because I don’t intend to start a back and forth. Sorry I posted anything that contradicts anyone.
