One Guy and His Chick Gun Safe Move

As per the thread that got batted around awhile back, we did our own safe today. It isn't one of the heavier ones, coming in at just north of 600 lbs. Still quite a load for my wife. I went to the bar and told her to call me when she was done. :)

Actually, I got it home with my truck and piggy-back forklift that I use on the job. Built up the front porch with pallets covered with OSB to put it on the same height as the front door. Cut some two foot lengths of 3/4" PVC pipe to roll it on and did like the Egyptians did. Didn't hav any Hebrews to grease the rollers with, but we got along just fine. Getting over the threshold was kind of sketchy but went pretty good.

We went careful and slow. And success is sweet. jd

Recently moved a vertical mill, 23-2500 lbs. Backed the trailer up, used pipe, and in it went. It seems that the old timers knew a bit about what they were doing.

and a flat earth map :)

I used two skateboards in parallel (side by side for you metric challenged).
I like your wife's ingenuity.
JD, I hope you put some steel towed shoes on your hands.

You know you are a - - -
when a safe fits in ANY decor .

Well done job to the both of you! Nice looking safe, I have the Freedom Security version Liberty safe like that. Reminds me that I have had it long enough, that I should replace the battery in the keypad.

I just pulled the same feat with this one at around 900 pounds. Used five friends friends to get it out of the truck and on the ground, but once on the smooth concrete it moved without issue. More muscle is definitely better here.

When we moved my mill, my friend and boss has a big truck with boom. We picked it up with an eye bolt in the top "arm" that is threaded for this purpose. The truck crane boomed out and lifted it 15 feet back into the shop. He went home and I moved it with conduit, and Zilla I wish I had rigid!!! Crushed a few pieces but rolled it into position by myself the next day. A gorilla bar and a Johnson bar help a lot.

I've moved my safe and a lot of other similar things this way. For at 600 lb safe, which is pretty light, I sometimes put it on a large furniture dolly so I can turn corners. The one great thing I got for your post is to use PVC pipe on finished floors. Great idea. Use lots of sections of it but it won't mar the floor. thanks for sharing. --Jerry

That,s the way they have moved heavy objects for centuries...

Lectrician here. I have moved a lot of switch gear using this method. Only diff, we used pieces of rigid conduit.
Hey other, When I was still working for a power company we used specially turned wood dowels about 4" diameter to move breakers and capacitors around in substations that were in buildings. I think 10,000 lbs. may have been the heaviest. We took the equipment out in the late 90`s and put new lighter equip. in outside stations. Most of the old heavy equip. had to be removed because of the high PCB content. Looking back I guess my back should hurt. Jeff
