The Great Powder Shortage of 2020 is upon us

I was lucky. I had this epiphany one day that I had collected enough guns and actually could probably get rid of a few and for the last year I've been accumulateing components and reloading tools. So while I'm still interested in adding to my stock. I definitely won't be hurting for primers, brass, powder and pills anytime soon and in the last month I've bought 3 new presses.

The powder man
Off topic? How so? It is a fact that many of the powders made today have been offshored to other countries such as Australia and Belgium, and that an interruption of supply chains will affect the supply of some types of powder, as is being seen.

If you have a problem with the facts, then the problem is not with the facts, but with your acceptance of them.

The manufacturing of the powders was not moved off your shores. They were always manufactured were they now are. The reason they are being imported into the US is that the manufactring plants in the US blew up and were not replaced.

I'm good to go, I lasted the 8 year Obama drought without any problems as throughout my life I would always make it a point to buy a couple of boxes of ammo every pay period, for now I'm good fo the next 20 years and by that time 3 things will have happened. I will be dead, or will be 20 years older, and I will have perfected my power pack for my ray gun.

Powder panic/ shortage ? I learned a harsh lesson back in 2013 as to how the gun crowd can act in fear. I paid $73 for a 500 ct of crappy 22lr Remington Thunderturds from Lucky Gunner back in 2013. Now jump to present day and "panics" are of zero concern.

Some FedEx worker in Thackerville Oklahoma apparently has plenty.
The nice lady at Grafs said I’m the second one from Texas to call today about an order that went missing there.

maybe the same people crying about not being able to get hand wipes rubbing alcohol are the ones hoarding reloading components

Nice!!
Buy what you can when you can.

I like the grinder in your reloading space. metal dust everywhere and assume sparks won't set anything on fire.

Not an issue as I rarely use the grind wheel and steels , and if on the rare occasion I need to I just lay an old moving blanket over the powder containers.

Yes, it's not an issue until that one quick grind on something that just takes a second and you bypass covering anything because it'll only take a second... then disaster strikes. I'd really think twice about relocating the grinder or the powder. But hey, it's your house, do as you please.

Time to research "orphan" powders - like the ones covered with dust sitting on shelves for many months. IMR 4320, Al 4000MR come into mind. H380 is sort of having a comeback. For years I used an older lot of H380 at 44 grains with Hornady 168 & Sierra 168 match bullets in the .308, velocities were about 2450 but with mild recoil and great results at 200 & 300 standing & rapid fire. H380 calling is it's use in the .22-.250.

I've actually been doing that. On another thread I talked about trying to find a load of 3031 and 55gn & 62gn FMJ pills that have acceptable accuracy out of my cz527, Cause I have over 16lbs of 3031 and tons of the aforementioned bullets.

This needs more work for me - my understanding is that ball powders may be made from reclaimed extruded powders some of which are either in excess of needs or beginning to show signs of deterioration. As I understand it, and this needs more explanation, the surplus extruded powders are dissolved then reconstituted for inclusion of NG, size and coatings. Possibly, surface tension has a role in making these powders appear spherical. Ball powders could be made from scratch instead of from dissolving extruded powders. I have the impression that some of the manufacturing process occurs under water. This gets into ball powders like H380, H414, H335, 4000MR & others which are made in Florida. I have not seen any recently manufactured extruded powders that have are made in the USA. My modest powder cache shows, Belgium (Ram-Shot, ball) Sweden, Switzerland (Alliant), Canada (IMR), Australia (Hodgdon - extruded), USA (Hodgdon & Alliant - ball). Favorites like IMR8208 & H4350 are difficult to find and my plans to use R16 are on hold. Lots of 4000MR, IMR 4320, W760/H414 at my LGS'. I have found 4000MR to be a great powder in the .243W (87-105's) & .300 WM (178-180's).
