Remington 788 22-250 Re-Barrel

Hi Folks,

I have a beat up old Remington 788 chambered in 22-250. The barrel is completely shot out. And when I say shot out, I mean TOAST. The firecracking and pitting extends 8" past the throat. If you even think about chambering a live round, the barrel lets out a faint whimper and fouls immediately. One would need cave exploratory gear and rappelling equipment to reach the bottom of the "canyons". Think coarse cheese grater and you're aproaching the condition. I would like to resurrect / re- barrel this rifle as it was my late uncles rifle and has sentimental value.

Any ideas of a smith that is more than a little familiar with the task at hand?

ANY gunsmith? I'm not sure I would be looking for "any" gunsmith though, no offense implied. I would prefer a smith that has successfully performed a few 788 re-barrels as there are significant differences.

Yep! Any gunsmith! If he hasn't experienced the 'significant' differences between fitting barrels to various actions he really isn't much of a "gunsmith".

The process is essentially the same as any other action re-barrel. 788s are great little actions. I've built a couple of 6mmXCs on them and they have been little tack drivers.

I have 2 different lose leaf note books, Stan. One is barrel threads & fittings, and various parts I've made over the years, and the other is notes/drawings I've taken on stock making and stock making tools I have made. No sense in re-engineering something you've already re-engineered once before.

A "tiporider"? I had to wikipedia that. Ahhh yes, a mechanical device once used to imprint red or black letters on to papyrus.

Using my trusty Abacus and Carbon dating to decipher the era, the last known "tiporider", dates back to the crustacean period.

Hey you guys, just a heads up...don't forget to set your sundials ahead this weekend. LOL...all in good fun and humor...I just turned 50.

Mike, How much sentimental value? You might consider getting the existing barrel re-bored. It sounds like it is well "stress-relieved". A .257 Robt or .243 would clean up the chamber nicely. Just another option.

About the only computer orientation that I'm real familiar with is this CNC that I have to program for barrel Contours otherwise give me these tools and I'm happy as a pig in mud.

I don't think a different caliber is in the cards. The magazines are specific to 22-250, and if I'm not mistaken, the ej port is too short.

Mike, you may be right, depending on when your rifle was produced. But wikipedia shows it was chambered in:

.222 Remington
.223 Remington
.22-250 Remington
.243 Winchester
6mm Remington
7mm-08 Remington
.308 Winchester
.30-30 Winchester
.44 Remington Magnum

A different magazine might be needed if you went to a .308 parent chamber.

A .308 size cartridge won’t work. The 788 22-250 action is too short. Take my word on this.
