Remington 788 .222 to 6.5 Grendel Project

Maybe some of the naysayers would think differently if it was called the 6.5 PPC....

;)

I think it is a cool project. I own an old custom BR from the 60's that Fred Sinclair opened from 222 BF to PPC. I love it.

I love 788's and am waiting to find a "closet find" (like a barn find car, but smaller scale) that old uncle Cleetus left to his nephew who would rather have a video console. I am hoping for a two'fer...maybe a 788 and a Parker DHE in exchange for the latest gaming device??
Good luck!

Very nice! I wish I had that skillset! I have been tossing around the idea of a 6.5 BR on a 788 except with a .308 bolt face. Might be interesting. I really like the 6.5 GRR I put together for my daughter, it doesnt need a brake either!

I am building a 6.5 grendel chambered ar for my daughter, I really am intrigued by the cartridge. I have also always appreciated the 788, hopefully the right one will follow me home one day. It seems really strange to combine the “newfangled” cartridge with the old school workin mans deer getter, but I absolutely understand the attraction. I am sure it will be a very nice rifle when finished.

I built a 6BR 788 from a 22-250 model and the single stack magazine functions fine with the 6BR rounds.

Extractor installed. You might think it is a little deep but it is perfect for the Grendel case. Machining for the SAKO extractor was interesting without any instructions but I measured carefully and took my time, it works perfectly. There is more to it than meets the eye, machining the slot, drilling the hole for the base pivot and then drilling the hole for the plunger and spring, it all has to be precise.

I made some progress today, took some pictures, the receiver is barreled, chambered, and head spaced. I had to make a new floor plate and a magazine catch. I will let the pictures show the progress -- It is still rough, I need to all the tweaking and finish work now.

The way the extractor is sitting in the bolt it won't snap over a case head, that is if the bolt face recess is the same diameter as the case head. The extractor depth looks correct for a .222 size case head.
