Berger 7mm 190gr long range hybrid

David
Omar also lost 2 shots with the 195’s in a Saum. Shots 19 and 20

@davidjoe

not sure why there are a few of you popping bullets with the 195. You guys must really be stepping on the gas to pop those bullets. Or shooting them in conventional groove barrels? Or running high intensity powders causing excessive heat. I have shot them in a number of 5R barrels at moderate speeds in 8 and 8.25 twist barrels. Running from 2775 to 2920 never popped a bullet. Even running long strings of 25-35 rounds without allowing the barrel to cool.

In 32” barrels they run incredibly well at 2775 and also at the 2860 node. 2910 node shoots good. But is very narrow. Try slowing down a little.

KNs ain’t that much cheaper once bedded and painted mate, I heard you saying $1500 just for paint!,+ cost of stock then prep etc etc..... Unless you get one for free;)

Well you dont HAVE to paint. We just special. Oil finished one will run just as well. Just not as sexy looking.

I dont envy you paying for that. Ken Noye way cheaper and just as good.

I'm running two Ken Noye's - one tracks noticeably better than the other due to tolerance differences which I don't like. The McMillan is superior after getting behind one.

Johnny, I just chronographed the last 2 saum rounds in the box that followed shot 20. (#19 delaminated and #20 was a delay 8) 2,976 FPS, both shots.

That’s a bit faster than you run them. Although this barrel is a 4 groove and just under 36 inches, the barrels that did actually blow all my other bullets described above, were 5R’s and about 5 inches shooter.

When Doug posted that Omar lost record 19-20, same bullet and RSAUM, that basically confirmed in my mind that barrel heat is our main culprit. I was letting them rip, after 12 sighters. I normally don’t take more than 5 sighters nor shoot rapidly, but I also typically run .5 grains more powder than this “safe big match” load. (I surmise that my bullets probably all explode after touching target paper at 1,000, and are likely to start a fire on the berm at Bayou :) ).

Two years back, Claudette burst a 180H through a Saum shooting rapidly. (And a 180 scenar shooting slowly, in the state long range).

I have never burst a bullet in anything but a saum, myself.

McMillan just returned my Kestros Zrail, inletted. It gave me my best finish in the Palma match, and a good result at 600, first outing at Berger.

davidjoe....barrel heat is our main culprit....is my assessment as well! However, barrels, number of grooves, rifling, bullets, powder, and even caliber, etc, all get the blame. Torture is torture!

Use a bullet more suited to Fclass and you'll probably have less issues IMO.

"Elite Hunter Bullets are identical in construction, shape and performance to the Berger Hybrid Target series, except they utilize a thinner J4 Precision Jacket for rapid expansion on game animals."

I knew I was doing it all wrong... ha! My bullets all stay together. Well groups maybe not HAHA! But they don’t blow apart they at least poke holes in paper ;)

Willow I know a Stock maker here in OZ that can help you out with stocks of exactly the same tolerances that are long and track very straight but not cheap!

I’m shooting 195’s presently at the range through a .284. 36.5” 5R. 8.5 twist. ** Johnny :) - this powder is that high energy stuff.**

.284 is shooting these 195’s in this barrel at 2,800 FPS, which overlaps some saums, and should be safely below discarding sabot velocity.

Brass to me looks like lower pressure than 54.5 of 4831 SC with 180’s. Barrel has to be tapered to be that long and make weight.

Screenshot_20200224-093059_Samsung Internet.jpg Screenshot_20200224-093059_Samsung Internet.jpg Well finally had a chance to get out with the new 190 bullet.
Case 7mm SAUM AI-
POWDER-H4831sc - 58.8grs = 2911fps/ 9.2 sd
Adg brass
Federal 210 primer
Shot multiple 3 shot groups today @ 600 yards.
Average group 1 to 1.5inch in a 10 to 15mph quartering head wind. 30 shots total.
Finally we have a bullet for larger cases that will not blow up.

Wow. That is some fine shooting.

Tested the 190's at 600yds in a straight .284, 2x fired Peterson brass, VV N160 from 52.2 through 54.0gr. Seated the bullets 0.016" OTL from light touch. 30" barrel. Shot 4 shot groups in near dead calm morning overcast. Top velocity at 54gr was 2770's and it seemed to be approaching a plateau in vertical and some reasonable groups but nothing to write home about except at the upper 2600 fps range (too slow to make the 190's worth running over a 180/184 at 2800+). I need to run the same test but sweep through 54.0-55gr as I think I was just getting into the next node with the last two charge groups.
