Interesting that's he's turning the necks down to .012 thick on Lapua brass. I've recently gone down to .0125 with a small batch to see how it compares to my normal .014, but have not yet seen a difference the lighter grip the thinner necks might have.

Ahhhh . . that's a GOOD question Dave! I've wondered about that too. And can only guess that it's likely that one can find those outliers that one doesn't want to fully process and either throw them out or use them in some other way. . . or so as to only process a small amount at a time??? Otherwise, I'd think the weight sorting would best be done AFTER things like neck turning, trimming and chamfering???

while I sort to 0.1 when sorting brass, it does not mean I never resort when done with prep.

Ooops, was thinking is terms for a 30 cal case like my .308.

Never saw the need or reason. I did sort 10 cases with the same volume versus the extremes from a lot of 100 once and shot 10 shot groups. The 10 the same lost.....3 out of 3. That was the end of my trying to pick the best cases. Of course, I believe weighing primers may help at 1000 yrs. so what do I know.

I keep thinking of a .330 nk and there is no way you can get a .010 wall thickness with .003 clearance, I have to get mine .0092 to make a loaded round of .327 (bullet is .3086).

He sorted 10 cases that were very same and another 10 cases that were the largest variations that were found in his sample and shot them side by side 3 times.

The 10 cases that were the same shot larger groups than the ones with the larger variations, so now he doesn’t sort cases anymore.

I wonder if he ran the same test more than once? For a scientific theory to be considered true, it has to be repeatable. . . otherwise, it's nothing more than anecdotal evidence.

The 10 that had identical internal case volume vs the 10 scattered throughout the 100 cases I measured the internal case volume of.All trimmed to the same length before volume measured.

This was not a scientific test but just my way to see if I thought there was any advatage to try and sort cases. It sure was not woth another 60 rounds down the barrel, at least to me. Scientific theroy......made me chuckle, thanks.

This,was a custom 708 shiloutte rifle. That was many years ago , not sure if I shot the groups at 200 or 300 yds. I think 200. I have shot hundreds of various matches and have never heard anyone say, I won first because of my matched cases. I have heard shooters who wii throw a case away if they .shoot a shoot wild out of a group in good condiitions or if a case falls off a bench and makes any kind of mark, or even if it leaves no mark. Why, just because I suppose.

Hey Jeff, I'm not disputing anything you have learned in your long shooting career but want to add that some 30-06 Lapua anniversary brass I bought from Bruno's some 15 years ago weighed an incredible + / - two tenths of a grain or less, that's for all of them, 100 count.

One thing to remember in these discussions is that different factors come to light in different disciplines. What is a problem at 1000 yards may be insignificant at 100-200 yards.

I shoot 100-200 and haven't weighed cases for many years, but if I did, I sure wouldn't do it before prepping brass. It takes lots of small pieces to make the pie and shoot well, but for me weighing brass is busy work.
