Removing Case Lube Help

Just got thru prepping and turning necks on 100 pieces of 40* shoulder brass. Cleaned with Q-tips, as always, the tumbled in walnut to get residue.

I read this post yesterday and it got me to thinking. So, I double-checked the necks with more Q-tips. Good thing I did, cause 12 cases had enough residue from the Imperial to have walnut shell around the shoulder.

Evidently, the Q-tips can't bend enough to get 40* shoulders cleaned completely. I like the patch in a slot idea, I'll try it next time.

The patches worked very well. I just finished them and it took maybe 30 minutes for 100. I changed the patch after every 5 pieces. For my 6mm necks, I was cutting a 3" patch into 4 pieces for a good fit.
Edit: Sorry, they were 2" patches, quartered.

Why can't you just use imperial dry neck lube..? That's what I use when resizing inside the necks with a q tip... Especially after getting media stuck in the shoulder area after tumbling useing the wax inside the necks...

A small amount of imperial goes a long ways! To have enough in the necks to get media stuck to it is a lot!...

There’s lots of things you won’t see in instructional videos about how we really reload our ammo

If it were me - I'd put on my hearing protection, eye protection and de-cap those cases, then clean them in a water-based solvent (sonic cleaners are heaven) then dry completely in oven on 250-degree setting or in brass dryer. I've had lots of issues with the lube wax or lubricant getting inside the cases and trying to remove all traces from inside the neck - it is worth it to just get it all out right off the bat. Dry tumbling after turning can leave granules of media stuck inside your cases and it just wont come out no matter how long you tumble sometimes. Then, when charging the cases, you notice the fill level is off from case to case. Just call it a $4.00 boo-boo if you don't reuse the primers.

Q-tip or bore mop.

I have never tried to remove Imperial with any solvents. I just always wiped it off with a cotton cloth, or tumbled them in corn cob media. So I don't know what solvents will remove Imperial. Since it is more of a wax, wiping it off is probably best.

I keep a spray bottle of isopropyl alcohol on my loading bench for the sole purpose of removing Imperial Sizing Wax. If I were in the OPs situation, I would use the aforementioned qtip or bore mop dampened ever so slightly with alcohol. It will remove all traces of the lube.

You only need enough lube to keep the cases from sticking. I use Hornady Unique and just a very very light coating on about every 3rd case is enough. If you use any inside the necks (apply with a Q-tip) you can clean it easily. I use a large plastic jar with hot water and Dawn dish washing detergent. Every once in a while shake it up and leave it sit overnight, then rinse twice and dry. A good cheap way to dry cases is in a small loaf pan or something similar, stand them all on primer end and put them in the oven at 200° for an hour. Just be sure not to let the wife know as she may frown on you using her equipment.

Where do you guys get 90% to 99% isopropyl alcohol? I've never seen it on the shelves anywhere.

Hard to find, but some drug stores have it while others do not. My small family owned drug store does, or I can place an order from them for it as well.

Folks-

We are talking about a few dollars in cost of primers. Wax is wax. Things adhere to it. Deprime, toss the primers out, Q-Tip for the hell of it with alcohol, tumble and start over. For me, there is enough to think about when shooting without hearing that voice in my head asking whether there is anything else adversely affecting my shooting. It is probably over caution, but I can't rid of that voice.
