Stock painting a how to

Nope! Can’t see her. Maybe it’s my upbringing. My Papa told me to never “look closely” at another man’s wife.;)

Possibly water in the air, trapped solvent from pounding on primer and clear without waiting for proper flash times, mould release agent as @Dusty Stevens suggested, or any combination of would be my guess.
If you popped a bubble could you smell solvent?

No I didn't pop any bubbles and smell them. Somebody else is worrying about them 20 years ago. I've seen and owned a few nice ones. Actually until I found Kavanaugh the problem I had was they would use too much material and it was a problem making weight.

That reminds me...
I need to weigh a stock before and after to no if I'm overloading.
I should have Terry Leonard's last stock here Friday for paint. I know he made them out of cedar to keep weight down.
I'll be tempering the wood 2 times before sealing with bond tech.
This will be interesting to see.

Yes youre way over weight if it was to be a lv weight rifle. 4 oz is typical for a br paintjob. The lv stock you did for me was 10oz and didnt need much filler. If the weight would have mattered i would have told you. I have one coming up we can work on.

Only option I can think of is to sand off more gel coat to compensate for materials used.

Can you drill the buttstock out to remove some weight?

We’ll discuss it but those both arent good options ;)
What might you suggest?
The weight has to come from somewhere.
If I'm tasked to paint a stock it's because the owner wants it to look good. And the only way to make a composite stock look good is to even out the highs and lows, both by blocking the substrate and the use of filler.
I block my heavy fill primer with 2 grits 1st block for straightening and the 2nd to lighten the scratch and remove millage. My second prime is basically done with a sealer that has a minimum film build, but allows me to create a smooth finish for paint, and is also chosen by color to be the best color for quick hiding of base coat for quickest coverage with a minimum film build.
Suggestions?
Maybe lose 1/4"-3/8" of that heavy ass barrel?

Barrels are already too short on a lv. Scopes done got alot heavier too

That explains the moulded butt.
I was also going to suggest removing material in front of trigger guard mounting location
