New Coyote Rifle

Good morning,

I am in the market for a new rifle. Mostly to call coyotes but occasional fox/bobcat. I also think it would be cool to call coons. My buddies I call with both have sold their 204 rugers and solely shoot their 22-250’s. I have been looking at a 224 Valkyrie. Most shots will be 300 yards and less. I reload so ammunition will not be an issue.

My question is, should I stay away from 224 Valkyrie and go with the tried and true 22-250? Or maybe even the 204? The 224 I am looking at is an AR platform with 1:7 twist.

Thanks for the info!
Under 300 yrds just about any caliber will work. I just hunt GH but I would want a semi auto for pigs or coyotes. I own a 6BR and a 6BRX great for any distance. Long barrel life, super accurate. The calibers like Valkyrie might be hard to sell if you wanted to get rid of it. You don’t need 4000 fps to kill a small animal. 5Speed on this website uses a 223 a lot. Read a lot of 5Speed post. He is the expert. PM 5Speed.

I'VE HAD BETER PREFORMANCE OUT OF A 204 W/35GR BERGER HP OUT TO 300YDS THAN I HAVE 52GR A-MAX OUT OF MY 223 AT 300YDS AND IM JUST SAYING WHAT I HAVE SEEN FOR MYSELF LOVE BOTH CALIBERS HAVE SEVERAL OF EACH

You may not need 4000 fps to kill the animal, but a really flat shooting cartridge comes in really handy for those of us not good at judging wind and yardage. I rarely have time to range the animal. I can shoot 12 ounce pop cans from zero out past 300 yards with no holder over from my 22-243ai. I also follow 5 Speeds adventures, but he would be considered a professional where I am rank amateur. I need all the help that I can get!!

I sight my 6BR and 6BRX for 275 yrds. It's about 2.25" high at 100 and 200 yrds. 0 at 275 and 3" low at 300. I don't need to know the range out to 300 yrds.

22-250 all you need with a Sierra 1365 or Hornady 55 gr sp, and a jug of H414 or H380. Knocks coyotes down and will not tear a cat up to bad.

Yea, I don’t doubt that. I have a 6BRAI that’s my favorite prairie dog rifle, but it doesn’t hold a candle to the 22-243ai for a coyote rifle. My pop can example was with my 100 yard zero. Here’s what StrelokPro gives me for a 65 Gr Gameking at 3700fps with a 275 yard zero. I can run it up 4000fps, but it starts flattening primers and the pockets loosen up too fast.
