Low budget rest feet

I (finally) bought a real rifle rest earlier this year, a Cowan, because it fit my budget and supports his school and the trades in America. But, the rest, bag and shipping tapped out my budget, so a speed screw and F/class feet would have to wait.

I decided to make my own low budget (free!) feet using the pointed screws/feet that come standard. I took some 1/2" thick delrin sheet scraps, cut to 3" diameter circles, threaded a through hole in the center and violla! I just got some Sinclair extended screws in, but need to grind them to a point so if I ever shoot on deep gravel or soft ground I can use the long screws.

I don't have the screws extended very far through the feet in the pic, but they can extend over an inch past the bottom. When shooting on the bench, I just spin the feet off if I want.

I've been pretty pleased with this rest, so far. Haven't used it a whole lot, my new stock is still at the gunsmith, and my current stocks don't fit the bag properly. But, for under $300 delivered for a windage top rest with spring preload to eliminate play, and it's made in USA by students, all proceeds go to class supplies, I'd buy one again over a BE made in China rest.

I've tested the feet in my yard, and they do keep the rifle from sinking very well. The F/class feet Joe Cowan sells add considerable weight at over 2lbs each, solid steel and 3.5" diameter. Feet threads are standard 3/8-16, so any of the Sinclair options fit too.

Budget is the mother of all DIY stuff. Good job.

Sure is! This seems to do the job of purpose built F/class feet, although without the weight. End result is the same, so I'm happy! I may just end up buying a speed screw and call it good. I can always get a large steel or aluminum plate and thread the feet into that, as well, if I wanted to.

I purchased the speed screw, it's well worth every dollar. ;)

I ordered a Bald Eagle rest from Grizzly a few weeks ago. The price was good so I accessorized with longer screws and F Class feet. Mine is a bigger size but I think you could get the screws and feet in 3/8-16 for a little over $20.

That's cheap and Delrin is expensive so you probably didn't save much.

It doesn't help you but maybe the next guy who needs feet will like it.

He works for a plastics manufacturer. When he said he used scrap, you can pretty much bet it didn't cost anything but time to make.
He's also producing blocks for front bags.

I missed that detail. Having free scrap Delrin is nice. Even cheap scrap Delrin would probably cost more than Bald Eagle F Class feet so he is lucky.

Ya know you guys are practically neighbors.
@Fast14riot found a good lil niche, making things shooter can use with what's basically garbage in his company's eyes.
Pretty inventive.

I guess I don’t understand something here. If the pegs go through the feet, what do the big feet do? With the “Super Feet” the peg fits onto the big feet and rubber on the bottom of the feet sits on the bench.

Think his intention was for FClass feet so the rest dont sink into the dirt

Stockton is a bit of a drive from silicon valley but kind of close I guess.

Yes, it's recycling at its finest.

On the other hand, Grizzly is selling the 3/8-16 4" extended screws for $2.50 and the matching F Class feet for $12.95. Shipping costs mess up the deal a bit but for most people ordering will be cheaper than the time they spend to DIY.

Don't get me wrong, I love DIY but it is really tempting to skip it when the alternative is so cheap.

The main point of this post was that if someone wanted to, they could use whatever materials they have at hand to make some f/class feet. These were scraps headed to the recycle bin, so they cost me nothing. Took maybe 15 minutes in total to make. I do have some extended screws now, just need to point them.

These are designed for use on soft ground. They serve no purpose on a bench or concrete. Although, I do use them to keep the pointed feet from gouging up my work bench by just spinning them off a little.
