Witt Machine bolt on muzzle brakes?

I have used one on a Tikka 30-06 for about 40 rounds.
Made a big difference on recoil. My main prob was that the screws that were included were a bit soft.

Have used one on Remington 700 243 from Walmart. Works great. Never had any problem of any kind over 3000 rounds. Now on another Remington 243 from Academy. As far as boring one out - Precisionrifleblog.com tested a lot of muzzle brakes in 2015 and found that running a 308 brake on a 6mm or 6.5 only made a 2% difference as opposed to a caliber specific brake.

I am a fan of threaded brakes but I did use a Witt clamp style on a light 7mag with a sporter barrel with zero issues. It was installed per instructions and is very effective. That being said I’ll go threaded from now on for that peace of mind and better looks.... just my $.02

Only one negative review from people that actually have purchased, installed and used this break. That review had issues with the perceived recoil reduction expected. Not bad in my opinion. Appears the allegations and fears are unfounded. I may hang one of these on a lightweight 30/06 I have and hate to shoot.

Dont be so sure. With as many rifles as there are coming thru do you honestly think i havent ever seen more than one?

I have a Kahntrol Solutions Clamp-On brake on one of my rifles and it's actually the most effective brake I've ever had or used.

Accuracy is better with the brake than without. But it's too much with big magnums for the concussion blast is severe.

First time I put it on, I torqued it to the manufacturer specs, and it flew off after a handful of shots,.. flew at least 50 yards LOL but no damage was done. landed on soft grass. From then on I torque it down by feel. nice and very tight.

I coated the inside of the brake and the end of the barrel with blue Loctite. Leveled the brake and torqued the brake screws dry. After getting them all tight, I took one out at a time and Loctited each. Left it set overnight before firing and have had no problems. Even with a .308 with maximum loads, the blast just slightly rings my ears with Pro-Ears 33 muffs. With the addition of foam plugs, it's no problem at all.

I put one on my Thompson Center, .223 Barrel. Works as claimed and reduced the recoil. I check the concentricity of the bore to the barrel to begin with, before ordering and then did the measurements that they suggested and installed as suggested as I have known people you put them on and had the come flying off on the first shot.

Excessively heavy, excessive number of ports, top ports are unnecessary and often undesirable. It strikes me as a brake designed by someone that doesn't know anything about brakes but had a machine shop.
My grandfather once told me that 99% of fishing lures were designed to catch fishermen rather than fish. Looks like a similar plot here

I have both a Witt machine and a kahntrol clamp on brake, both on a 270 win, on different contour barrels. They both work great and didn't come loose. I use the expected torque on the screws. Main issue is when you take it off, the ends of the barrels have scarring from all that heat and chemicals from powder burn where the clamps meet but not enclose completely over the barrel. The brake itself inside has voids between the end of the barrel and the inside of the brake, which accumulates carbon from the powder burn. Pain to clean both brakes.

Have one on a 300 RUM for about one year. Shoot weekly never had a problem, get great groups, never came loose, and still looks good. Only problem is getting it off to clean.

Haven't cleaned mine yet but am thinking about hanging the rifle from a floor joist and dangling the muzzle in a jar of solvent for a while then blow dry it.

Put a Witt on my 7mm Magnum and it is OUTSTANDING. Very good recoil reduction. If you measure accurately for your order and follow the installation directions, it will not come off until you take it off.

I admit to knowing little to nothing about the design/physics of a muzzle brake. However, I have installed the Witt Machine Brakes on the following rifles:
350 RM (shooting 250 gr Hornady RN)
350 RM used as a backup rifle to the above (shooting 225 Nosler Accubond)
6.5x284 (shooting 150 Sierras and 156 Bergers)
6.5 Creedmoor (shooting various 140gr bullets) mostly VLDs and ELDs
7mm-08 (shooting various 168/180 class bullets)
243 (shooting various class bullets) mostly Nosler
6mm Dasher (shooting 105gr Berger VLD Hunting)

I have several other rifles with various thread-on brakes. My experience with the Witt Machine Brakes have been positive. I will say their claim of up to 60% recoil is not even close. It's more like 25 to 35%. They do make a difference, especially with the heavier calibers, just not what they claim.

I failed to properly tighten the brake on the 350 (shooting 225 Accubonds) and it did come loose. I retightened using Loctite and have had no problems, since. With calibers less than the two magnums I don't use Loctite as I remove them when cleaning the gun. I soak them in white vinegar, often, and it seems to eliminate 90% of the carbon/copper.

I don't feel the Witt Machine Brakes are any better, or worse for that matter, than many of the thread-on brakes on other rifles I own. If you're willing to put up with removing them on occasion, and for the price, they are a very good alternative.

I have seen the question asked on a few forums: does Witt clamp on brake affect accuracy. I have clamp on brake installed on a 24 in Encore 445 SM (3/8 inch longer 44 Mag case). Son shot this 100 yd 10 shot group.

Just got one for a 308 - approx 1/3 recoil reduction and fit and finish looks perfect. Unfortunately, my groups did open up a bit (200 yard avg from ~0.6" opened to avg 1.25") - called Witt for advice (thinking barrel harmonics/maybe add a tuner) and he couldn't have been nicer. Offered to build another one if we couldn't figure it out. I removed it and wet it thoroughly with wipeout and sat it on some patches. They turned blue... so I think I've got a mild bullet strike - which is at least an easy fix!

Did you send in barrel measurements when you ordered it? I used blue Loctite on mine on the barrel, not on the screws, tightened it up completely, then took each screw out one at a time and Loctited it. I've never had any problems and the group size maybe got a little better. Did you also level it with the rifle?
