6BRA load data

I have shot Roy's original 103's, his 106's, and the new 103 "A". They all shot well. Slightly different tuning for each, but they all shot well.

So today I pulled off the barrel I shot at GBA Nationals over the last two days because I have another 6 BR Ackley barrel that needs to be worked out. In early testing it didn’t do much better than 5” at 1K so I decided to try Roy Hunters 106 because the bullet geometry is quite different than the original bullet. I just loaded up a dozen at .3 gr. increments and shot them over flags to see if the barrel might like them. I also wanted to see if I encountered pressure, which I didn’t. Just three shot groups at 100.

I was happy with the results so the next test will probably be a 1K ladder test.

I thought others may be interested if they had been considering Roy’s 106.

Dave.

So here is that 1K ladder I mentioned I was going to shoot in the earlier post. Eight shots from four loads into 3.3”. Due to work and wind, I was out of time to further develop and identify tune windows so I picked the middle and shot that load in IBS Nationals. I finished fairly well but now I will continue to test and see how good it gets.

Roy says these 106’s are no longer available but the 103 A should tune quite similarly.

This is with a Hawk Hill barrel.

I'm a little late to this party but I figured I would share what I've had success with this past season. Certainly enjoyed reading what everyone else has been having luck with!
I think I've been doing things a little differently but the same in a lot of ways.... if that makes any sense lol
I've been shooting a 6bra 268 nk, Krieger 237 4 groove, bore rider throat, bat 3l action, Wheeler lrb plywood stock, berger 105 VLDs well sorted, h4895 31.3-31.5gr depending what time of the season, hbn treated necks and bore, annealing each time, sonic cleaning each time, tumbling each time.
I really think that its less about finding the "magic recipe" and more about finding the most reliable and repeatable total ammunition production system. If you find a spot where the rifle will consistently produce repeatable results around a technique that is easily repeated at the loading bench, good things are possible! I like to tune for "forgiveness". If I can find a load that will overlap in a wider powder charge or seating depth, I tend to favor it over the absolute smallest. Sometimes that's hard to do though. Hopefully you get the small ones in the forgiving window. I am a firm believer in sharing information and techniques... after all it comes down to execution. Hopefully this helps some! I love talking about it, pondering, and testing! I'm already looking forward to next season and what I would like to work on over the off season.

Guess I’m the oddball or odd man out as I’ve stayed with using Varget in my 6BRAI and only shooting 31.0 grains with 103 grain bullets.
Just this morning I decided to revisit my seating depth tune as somehow I had the wrong data wrote down.
I loaded up 3 each of the above charge at 1.844, 1.841, 1.838, and 1.835
I decided to test at 300 so I could easily hold my POA tighter since I was just doing the 3 shots.

So after putting 6 rounds down the barrel to foul it I started with the 1.844 load definitely didn’t like what I saw so I decided to shoot the 1.835 load (original tuned load) and it wadded them up in a .258 group so I called it quits right there. I didn’t see the need to waste Bullets and powder for the next 2 sets.
Here’s what it shot this morning.

Those were shot this weekend at a 600 yard match at Vapor Trail. The targets tally up to a 1.865 2 Gun Agg (8 Targets). The load was 30.6 of H4895, 450CCI Primers, 103 Hammers seated .006 into the rifling. Lederer barrel, DS Bat action, Scarbourgh stock, jewell trigger, topped off with a massive 40MM 12x52 Valdada Terminator!

So why did you go with 103,s. And not 105,s ?

Long story short! One of my good friends wanted something different and he asked me to make him some 103s this winter. It was a large batch for one person, and he’s not been shooting a lot. I kept some for myself encase he thought there could be something wrong with the batch.

I personally don’t feel they are any better or any worse then the 105s. However things tend to take on a life of their own. The first thing that made them highly desired, is only myself and one other person has them! Next I said I wasn’t going to make anymore! Third I’ve shot them well! I’ve set two possible records, Won seven 2 guns and racked up over 200 Shooter of the Year points with them. So the combination of success and being unobtainable has in a short time elevated them to mythical status!

Because the burn rate is too fast. His 87 VLDs are well suited for it, but it pressured out too quickly and was not accurate with heavier bullets.
That being said- I have been using it to fireform with 26 grains and 105 hpbt with a 10 k jam which has been relatively accurate, nothing special.
They publish a 3700 kj heat potential in comparison to around 4000 KJ with varget/ h4895. Meaning- the barrel does not heat as quickly.

However if given the choice between AR comp and Varget/RL15/ H4895- I'd go with the typical powders you see listed on this thread.

I got over 3000 with a Berger 108 moly and never hit any pressure. Shoots the 2950 node without even breathing hard. Shot very tiny at 2875, very tiny 2950, and 3025 wasn't bad. Wasn't bad between those velocities. As far as accuracy... I have no idea what you are talking about. The day I shot it was BLASTING from 6 to 7. Probably 10-15 mph and all the groups were right around 1/4 inch.
