Gritty bolt opening

I bought a CZ 455 American a few days ago and it shoots great. If you cock the bolt & close it and then open without firing it opens smooth. The problem is that when the bolt is cocked and fired it is hard to open the bolt and it sounds like 60 grit sand paper rubbing together. Any opinions. thanks, My other 455 PT and 452 are slick as butter.

When i was searching for my first quality ? 22 rimfire i rejected the CZ 455 for that exact reason. It was like rubbing two files together.

Breaking in the CZ 455 American with 6 different types of ammo, Vortex 3-15x44 Gen ll. The center-x measured .40 edge to edge and the wolf was .35in. Guess I will play with these 2 a little more. Bolt still a bit gritty.

It’s probably the cocking piece and ramp if it’s only gritty when opening the bolt to cock it. Make sure this area is clean and lubed with the proper grease. You may want to polish these surfaces if the lube doesn’t help much.

If its only gritty when cocking on a fired round, then I would say the bolt face may be a little rough or the firing pin hole a little oversized and some brass is flowing in the space between the pin and the hole. Check a few fired pieces of brass and the bf with a magnifying glass. Maybe a few minutes deburring with a fine stone may help.

Is there 25 yard competition shoots in your area ? Try that CZ at 50 yds.

Cade-

I can tell you from experience with two 452's that I own and a few more owned by shooting pals that after about 300-500 rounds, all roughness disappeared.

I do suggest you call CZ in, I believe, Kansas City, and ask for the tech people. Describe the issue. They will either confirm what I wrote above or give you a label to ship to them. The turnaround time is not that bad. Whatever you do, be careful. You don't them to say you screwed it up by doing X, Y or Z.

BTW- It looks like a cinch that you will be .6 MOA at 50 yards.

I just purchased a 457 MTR. It is “gritty” as well. It was suggested that I “stone” the bolt because CZ embosses the serial numbers instead of engraving them. I can actually feel these on the bolt.

From your description, I wonder if it is the firing pin spring hanging up or rubbing inside the firing pin. this rifle uses a PAS system and if the bore where the spring is contained is rough this could be a cause of what you and others have experience. had a similar problem on an H&R M12 firing pin spring was binding inside the pin.
