I like the ole benchmade myself

In my Navy days those were called butterfly knives. They were very plentiful in the Philippines. It was amazing how fast some of those guys could get one out of their pocket, give it a couple of flicks and show you the pointy end of 4 or 5 inches of cold steel.

Benchmade is good , Spyderco is good , for fixed blade I like Esee , Case is good , I also like a buck 110 but they are of course big and heavy.. Automatic is legal here so I have a selection of them , basically two half gallon crown bags full of knives... What do I carry daily for the last 20 years? A $6 knife my mom bought for me at a feed store , Classic china made lock back... It's never failed me and if I lose it I have another one that's brand new bought 20 years ago also... I have soooo many different brands anymore , fixed , automatic , folders etc...

After going through a forest fire and losing everything the only company that would talk to me about repairing a knife because of fire was BUCK... None of the other big name companies would even talk about it , just to bad , go buy another... Not buck , they have a heritage plan that will fix old or destroyed knives back for $20... Done by hand and returned with a note about what they did... Because of that kind of service I own about 3 110s and a 110 automatic built by buck.... They not only repaired it they left as many original parts as they can for instance if it was your grandfather's old buck , you want that one fixed not just another one...

A really good company to order knives from is www.bladeops.com. They have a great selection , great prices and free shipping on everything... Their C/S is very good also... I have ordered alot from them with no problems.... Because of that I end up with way to many nice knives I will never use... Lol....

If you purchase a knife that clips to the inside of your pant pocket...Be careful with getting in the driver's seat, (if your knife is clipped to your right side pocket) Don't scratch your paint. Don't ask how I know.

Gerber is my choice for carry and for carry and lose knives. I carry a small 1.5" blade in my pocket and a 3" clipped to the same pocket. I paint them florescent orange so they're easier to find when "misplaced"

For an inexpensive pocket knife I like Opinel .Light ,sharp, and has a unique locking system that is fool-proof . I have many,the options are endless . I like the # 8 size for everyday carry . They have thin blades which take a real fine edge.

If you want to buy once and cry once. Reese Bose is one of the greatest makers of (folding or straight) knives currently in the world, almost as famous as his Dad Tony (who’s designs were utilized by Case and still are in fact). Believe, Tony only makes knives for the Blade Show (raffle/auction) now, handful per year. Reese will make a knife to your spec on steel, handle material etc. There are also knife purveyors that collect them (both Tony and Reese) and offer for sale, usually at one and a half to twice the billed price from Bose. I’ve owned a lot of production and custom knives in my life and have a deep collection of each, but nothing is as good as a Loveless or Bose. I carry a Micarta handled 154 CM bladed Reese Bose knife everyday, last 6 years.

simple, decent quality, relatively inexpensive
Been carrying the same one for 35 years.
30 of those years were as pipefitter.
Tips broke on one blade, all are much smaller from being sharpened. Just an good all around knife.

I hate crap in my pockets. For this reason, I carry a small buck knife two blade or a Gerber thin single blade.

The OP knows not much about knives.
Don't buy a high grade, steel folder, you won’t be able to sharpen it...not likely to learn.
I suspect you are not going to train to be a knife fighter.....probably lose a finger or two, plus you don’t want a 6” knife in your pocket.
Buy a Boker ceramic. Idiot proof, don’t need to ever sharpen( cannot anyway), carbon bolsters with clip, cannot even tell it ‘s there. Cut everything from your steak to box opening, has clip, you can’t dull the thing.
Only thing you cannot do is use the blade as a pry bar.....it will snap.
Less than $100 on the bay.....one and done for years.
If you lean toward traditional, look at the small-medium Al Mar pocket knives, very elegant, while practical and use Seki steel which yields a fantastic blade.

Gerber, I like my Gerber 600 lock back. I've had it since 1997 and used it for everything from opening boxes to cleaning wild game. Easy to carry, open one handed and maintain an edge.

I'm obviously a benchmade fan. Top to bottom.. 940-2 (osborne), 535 (bugout) with titanium scales and 550 (mini griptilian) with micarta scales.

I'd say my favorite is the 940 or bugout. Not the cheapest of knives but I just love the axis lock.

I use to carry traditional slip joints like Case but once I switched to the modern blades with pocket clips I don't think I can go back.

Spyderco has a ton of great knives to choose from as well.

Been carrying a Benchmade auto for a very long time. Lost it once in a cow pasture while chucking and my Son found it a year later. Washed and oiled and back in action! Stays sharp and when needed a couple of pulls through the Warthog and it shaves again...I go nowhere without it, even in my suit pant pocket at Church...

i carry a leatherman wave now, actually i have 2 for when i destroy one and can carry the spare when the other goes back for repair. no fault of the knife though, it can got through ALOT! of use and abuse

I have a assisted knife with pocket clip, it's a Buck one of the larger ones I forget the model. That seems to be in my pocket the most because it's very easy to get with one hand and open..

Little shout out to Buck's service department. I sent back a few that I have sitting around for repair. They came back looking better than new and the service folks put a better edge on them than factory.. My Buck tool was discontinued so I elected for another 112 folder..

I have been carrying a pocket knife as long as I can remember..last 20 yrs. it has been a CRKT
