Peterson 284 Brass

I been watching and not much feedback on the Peterson 284 Winchester brass. Is it a good alternative to Lapua or not. Thanks. I been about to order some, but its hard to not go with Lapua.

Bought some - and so far it is as good or better than Lapua. I only had to skim the necks (.001) to be consistent all around. On my Lapua it’s .003 to be consistent.

I am getting better loads too - I definitely be buying more of the 284 Peterson brass.

Tim,
I used it in a local match last month and it shot very well. It has less volume due to thicker necks and web material to keep primer pockets tight. So far I like it better than Norma or Winchester 284 brass.

Looks a little cheaper than Lapua brass is also.

I posted a few months ago when another person asked questions about Peterson brass. Here’s part of my answer that may help you.

“I’m actually prepping Peterson .284 right now and the necks are nice and thick but turn down great and you always end up turning off material along 100% of the neck so it’s really consistent. To do so you’ll need a good neck turner since you’re taking more material OR do it in two passes. I’ve turned thousands of Lapua in the past and they’re always a mixed bag for me. Sometimes material is absent from the turning (in the negative if you will), sometimes the neck turns 100%. It’ll eventually fill in with flow on the Lapua but the bottom line is you can feel the quality of the Peterson when you’re handling it. I added a couple pics of my turned Peterson brass.

I just bought 2,000 rounds of the Peterson .284 and I’ve done random testing across all 40 boxes and tolerances are crazy good for wall thickness, runout, pocket depth and weight (that’s all I’ve tested so far) and in most cases it’s better than what I’ve found when measuring an equivalent amount of Lapua. I’ve still evaluating it but so far I’m very happy.”

Here are a few more thoughts a couple months later. I am really liking the Peterson brass and I’m now a couple firings into my first 500 pieces. It shoots great, it’s sizes great, and like everybody says it takes a little bit less powder to achieve the same pressures and velocities. Their customer service is phenomenal as I had a problem with the size of the boxes that the brass comes in and they actually sent me some larger ones to use for competitions. At the end of the day for me the tipping factor is the fact that I don’t have to expand the next when I am starting to prep new brass. That goes along way for me.

I will say though, the fancy case is worthless it won’t hold a cartridge and close after some erosion. They could just ship in a bag and lower the cost to us consumers and sell a crap ton.

peterson brass in my 6xc is very good... necks very uniform thickness .0142 to .0149 thats dam good..actually the 40 I chekd was .0142 to .0146 max....I did find one at 0.149 the brass is great in my book

Thank you gentlemen, looks like I need to give some a try.

I have 2 reamers in 284, one ordered for the Norma as a no turn with .320" ND. seems like it will also work very well with the Peterson. I ordered 100 pieces. My barrel is currently still unfired with a .315" ND. I may run the larger diameter reamer in, and make life easier...lol

@tclaunch
So a .501” at .2 and .4759” at shoulder, 2.1800” length reamer spec should work with Peterson?

No. Just whidden full length dies with bushing.
I haven’t experienced anything negative with them. No “click”.
Fair enough, can’t comment on the Whidden only used the Wilson and Redding FL Bushing dies...Did you send fired brass to Whidden?

Yeah it’s weird. I called and made a causal complaint that the boxes that the .284 come in don’t hold rounds loaded for competition. I was told that they choose boxes based on SAAMi specs and can’t be responsible for choosing a box based on any loading possibility or people who chase lands. I told them that was nuts as almost everyone who shoots .284 loads longer than SAAMi but to be fair they didn’t seem interested in making any modification on that front and I probably don’t blame them if they’ve already committed to buying a large amount of the boxes already but it’s still frustrating to have 40 boxes that I can’t use. On the customer service side however they were kind enough to send me four boxes that were one size larger and they’re great for me at local matches now. Boxes aside the brass is great. Better than the opposite occurring. ;)

Agreed but its just mind boggling they spent a crap ton on fancy things that don’t mean a hill of beans.
But i am liking the brass so far

Yes, they have committed to buying 10s of thousands of the boxes they chose to use to get the best price possible. SAAMI and CIP are the only standards so that's what they use. Custom boxes for each order would increase the cost of the product more than it is now.

The boxes they use now are high quality and protect your brass and loaded ammunition. If you're frustrated, pull together a description and a couple of pictures then run an ad here. My guess is that they would sell quickly and you could use the money for the size boxes you want to fit your ammunition. :D
