I see you served so you and I are close in age. Old eyes are not young eyes. I would find a used 40x Leupold Comp, enough power, not too much that mirage kills you and all things being equal brighter than a variable and sharper due to having less lenses. I have several 40 and 45 Leupold Competitions and are the only scopes on my competition rifles I have never had to send for repair. The 45 starts to accenuate the mirage, I would say 40 would work well for your shooting. I have shot steel out to 1000 with variables and they were on 40x most of the time. I am not sure why all the fascination with variable target scopes, most shooters have the set on the same power 99 percent of the time and a lot is given up with variables as far as field of view, brightness, and clarity. We shoot 100 and 300yds for groups then go out to 4,5,6,7 on steel. My question is what power would be suitable for us? Also should we be using a FFP or second?
The 10-50x60 #25176 is another great option. I just purchased one after using the 8-32 model and love it. 10X isn't too much low end power for target shooting at known range. When out at 600-700, then higher power will be nice. 32X would probably be plenty of power but having reserve doesn't hurt. Tough to beat the Sightron's price for an excellent scope.^^^^^^
Muleman, Sightron’s newest version of this scope with zero stop is model #25168. The model with the illuminated dot is #25169. These are the 6-24x50.
The 8-32x56 is model#25173.
And in case anyone missed it, Sightron has a $100 rebate on the SIII during this month of July. The 10-50x60 #25176 is another great option.
