30-28 nosler. Insane group.

Well a couple buddies and I took a few rifles out this weekend and set the steel targets up at 952 yds. There was zero mirage and almost zero wind. I was really excited to shoot my 30-28 nosler due to the insane vertical it held at 400 yds, .04 moa. Here’s the results:
First shot on the steel plate hit the left side. I made a windage correction and shot 3 shots, waiting a minute or so between each shot. Ontarget software measured it at 1.508” or .151 moa. I shot another 3 shot group that had the first two in the same splotch on the steel. The third shot moved a couple inches to the right due to the wind. This rifle holds insane vertical especially since all my shooting is done off a bipod. 215 Berger at 3070 FPS w h1000, cci 250 and virgin ADG 28 nosler brass necked up to 30 cal.

Rifle has a:
Kelbly atlas action
Manners eh1 stock
Proof Research sendero contour 9.0 tw
Self timing 5 Port "Muscle" brake
Triggertech diamond trigger
Hawkins bdl bottom metal
Kahles K525i scope bedded into a set of NF 6 screw rings.

I’ll have some identical 30-28 noslers instock in 4-6 weeks. Simply run a 30 cal expander mandrel through the 28 nosler brass. Then load and shoot.

Wow, that is insanely tight! My load is identical (215's over H1000 at 3050 fps) and it shoots 2-inch three shot groups at 800 yards routinely. It is an amazing cartridge for sure. Last year was my first year hunting with it an it hammered my NV buck at 805 yards.

Thank you. That is an awesome shooter. Congratulations on the buck as well. I know several people shooting the 3050-3100 node w 215 node. Its definitely a great velocity window. I might try some n570 and see if I can hit the next node.

What is your barrel length? I’m at 26 inches. I am interested to know how the N570 does.

I’ll have to have you build something for me some day. Your work is outstanding!

Im at 26" also. Ill update when I give the 570 a whirl. That sounds great on the rifle. I keep parts instock at all times and have a 4 month or less lead time.

Very nice shooting :)

Shooting prone from a bipod is the way to go in my opinion, especially with large magnums. With good form, the ability to consistently follow through and have good recoil recovery is just so much easier.
All of my very best groups were shot from a bag and bipod setup like yours.

Thanks. I agree. I have a Seb Neo and haven't used it in several years. The big atlas 5h bipod resists torque and doesn't allow the rifle to hop around. I can spot hits at 400 yds in my 10 lb norma improved with the scope at 25x and 215 bergers at 3200 fps. Reticle hardly leaves the target during recoil. In my heavy norma improved, 15lbs, I can watch the trace go down range. They all have my self timing 5 port "Muscle" brake on them. Ive just recently started using the Modular Evolution bipod. So far I like it a lot also.

Hey Ryan, what is the rear bag you're using in the OP? Is that the "Game Changer" bag?

I like how well it wraps around the butt of the stock. Might want to try one out. Thanks.

.....Well it looks like a "Game Changer" bag so I just ordered one. Looks like it will help steady the rifle a lot better than a traditional smaller bag or stiff leather bag.

I like that rail. Ive been thinking about making one that extends out a bit on the hunting stocks im building rifles with. Yep its the Game Changer at Armageddon Gear. I love it. Works great to strap under the stock and rest the gun on windows in blinds, barricades etc.

Will do on the powder.

I just picked up an LRA bipod for a good deal. Not quite as wide as the Atlas 5H, but definitely wider and lower center of gravity than any standard bipod. Mounted on my extended rail and with the Game Changer bag in the rear, it should provide a very stable platform. Now if I could only shoot groups like Ryan.... ;)

Where did you happen to get that rail? Thanks

I built it myself. I buy blank picatinny rails in long pieces so I can make whatever I want on the mill.

Edit: Deleted photos and descriptions cuz I dont want to steer so far off topic from the 30-28.

My father in law just got word that his 30-28 Nosler is finished. He also has ADG 28 Nos brass and plans on trying the 215s. His is a semi custom on a Rem 700, TT trigger, and AG Composites cf stock. Not sure what muzzle brake he went with, but I believe the barrel is an all stainless steel barrel made by Proof... He's gonna go pick it up from the gunsmith at the Deep Creek BR shoot in Missoula this weekend.

I also just put together a straight 28 Nosler on an old Savage action I bought in a whim for next to nothing. Perhaps a lapse in judgement on my part. Lol! Dont know if I want to shoot it or sell it unfired... Not much of a Savage fan but the Rifle Basix SAV-2 trigger I put on it is actually pretty decent. Dont really need another big magnum at the moment since Alex is chambering another 300 NMI for me with a Proof CF 1 in 9" twist on a Kelby Atlas.

My father in law ordered 5 lbs of N570 from Powder Valley and has another 8 lbs of N570 on order with a local vendor. Sure hope the VV powder works well  We also have H1000, Retumbo, IMR 8133, IMR 7977, RL26, and RL33 on hand for testing and targets set up out to 800 yards.
