Hornady A Tip Match, anyone?

I guess greed finally took over at Hornady. The original A-Max was a good shooting bullet at a decent price. Then the ELD became the next great thing for a 5 spot more per box, and many more complaints about them on this forum. Has the aluminum tip improved the accuracy so much to justify these prices? If it costs that much, it had better fly to the X-ring on its own. For that kind of cash, I'll go with Berger until Hornady's price matches their performance.

PS: don't get me wrong, I am a hornady hunting bullet fan, nothing shoots better out of my deer rifle than their BTSP, another inexpensive, low tech bullet.

The only bullets that appeal to me are bergers across the board, 30 csl 175SMK, and 32gr, 54gr hornady varmint bullets.

Hornady lost me mostly woth the discontinuing of the 123Amax. That bullet hammered in one of my rifles.

I scored some of these out of classifieds.
I measured the odd ball box of 100

All that I cared to weigh roughly a dozen 123.1 gr each.
What were they thinking dropping these from thier line?

My guess is that these are geared more towards ELR shooters, much like the Warner Flatline bullets and other turned solid bullets. It will be interesting to see if they come out with a 338, 375, or 408 cal variant. I for one would be interested in the 6mm and 6.5mm offerings for occasional, really long shots.

For those of you placing pre-orders, are you having to pay up front or at least put down a deposit?

No, just an email address. When they arrive, you will be notified. Then order immediately or you'll be waiting again for another backorder. Some places will expect an order placed then send you your bullets when they arrive

Do you feel like you can share a load or two?

300 PRC !!!

I might get crucified for this but I figure enough time has passed. So....

I'm going to say that is not accurate. The contract for the .300PRC for the Gov't guns/ammo has the 225's in them with the plastic tip. The A-TIPS where not even close to being available/ready just due to the time frames involved. I could be wrong but I'll say 99% sure. In fact I could probably back that up about 2 years or possibly more when the Gov't first tested and shot rifles with .300PRC and they used preproduction .300PRC ammo with the .225 ELD-M bullets. How do I know that? We made the barrels for the rifles and got feed back on how the guns shot along with the ammo.

I could be wrong on some of the dates/time frames but I know I'm in the ball park.

Now not to say the Gov't couldn't order and get some of the new A Tip bullets here in the future. That I think would be cool!

Later, Frank

That was my meaning. What a better platform ( In hornady's eyes) for the A Tip bullet/cartridge. The government picked up that cartridge desidn for a LR sniper platform and now Hornady has built not only one but two potential ELR bullets for the .30, 230/250. Coincidence or not ? Either way, it's hornady's bullet as Is the 300 PRC cartridge. Certainly a Win, Win for Hornady.

They have been making Al tipped bullets for sometime in 50 BMG and these have long been favorites for match shooters. Unfortunately the $7.00 each cost puts 750gr. rounds in the neighborhood of $9.00 each! $75 for 100 is cheap. Have you priced .338 LM recently? They typically run $.80 for 300gr. SMK and sometimes are on sale for $.60.

I just decided to shoot what I can semi-afford!!
