I am asking about your new A tip bullets and was wondering the big difference from your amax bullets from before. Like the #28401 bullet was made the same way. What gives ? Back to the old design with a little modifactions. ? Repacking and doubling the price
of an old design … They look the same as my old amax bullets . what gives ? Later
SUPPORT FROM HORNADY
The similarity of the two bullets is that they both have a lead core, copper jacket and aluminum tip however, the degree to which our technology has advanced makes a huge difference. The consistency of the jacket and its shape and uniformity as well as the machined tip is almost exacting the tips and this gives us ability to move the stability point of the bullet an much more that we have never before been able to.
Thanks,

I suppose time will tell. But I’m not sure this is a market that can’t be served some other way. I dunno, But what pops up in my pea-brain is what is the benefit and does it justify the cost? For ELR, there appear to be some other options/factors in play. For CMP HP/F-Class/TR there are practical constraints that this initial release has passed by. So it’s a niche product for a niche sport.

Or maybe I’m missing something?

Or maybe I’m missing something?

Maybe not; however, the reaction over on some other boards seems to be favorable toward the idea of some of the 6s for PRS shooting.

I think if they had put out a 30 cal in the 195gr to 215gr range that would stabilize in a 1:10* there would be a bunch of F-TR shooters trying them out. That is assuming they made one with a G7 that was significantly better than the .326 or so of the 200.20x.

*If the bullet required a faster than a 1:10 then the majority of F-TR shooters would be waiting for news and results from guys who have faster barrels on the shelf to do testing. Most aren't going to the expense of buying a 1:9 or a 1:8 just to test a bullet.

I'm going to wait and see how long it takes for Hornady to get over itself and put those "same production clones" in a loose box and sell them for 30.00 a box. Maybe even less since they don't wash them and we have to do the degreasing. Keep the 10.00 sock, I'll just use Bounty Paper towels. (Oh how I dislike cleaning sizing lube off anything. ;))

If the G7 on the 230 is real, and if they will shoot they

The open guys might find some love. That 230 would run in an open gun and if the BCs are correct it will shoot 10" inside of a 7mm 180 Hybrid in a 10MPH full value assuming 2800 to 2850 or so for both bullets.

That might be enough to drive some more shooters from the 7s to the 300WSM.

I know several guys who tried 230s in F-TR and all that I know have abandoned that.

I think they'd pay the money if they worked but I don't see too many of them wanting the recoil. Hard telling though.

They should put the twist requirements in the product description!!!! I wonder how many phone calls they get inquiring about twist rate?

Was wondering the same factor until I read this from their website. I feel better now.

Performance
  • Doppler radar verified low drag coefficient (high BC) bullets are forgiving of twist rate, seating depth and muzzle velocity.
  • Refined design of the AMP® bullet jacket offers industry leading uniformity and concentricity.

That chart is a little misleading as you would have to average the velocity banded BC values of the Hornadys to compare to the others or the Bergers at least. There is not that much difference there as that chart implies. For example the 140 ELD-M has an averaged G7 value of .318 not .326. I am sure Hornady has also published the highest possible numbers for these new A-tips as well for their new marketing campaign.

Compared to a bullet of theirs that I do shoot
143 eldx with a G1 bc of .625
Thier 135 Atip gives me a .012 better bc for twice the money.
As for the 153 Atip stuffing that thing in my 6five case at mag length would force me to give up to much case capacity needed for powder to even look at shooting this bullet.

Good luck Hornady, I'm out!

Well at least they are trying to save you some money by making you clean them yourself . Just clean them one at a time or they won't be in sequential order anymore .
