A 600yd 30-30

The first chrono figures. It is being built by a forum member for another forum member. I believe it will be a Palma rifle.

I have finished with the velocity testing for now. Still using the 168 gr. Berger Hybrid out of a 28" barrel. Temperature was 51 degrees. Four powders were tested, and three of them produced good velocity. The burn rate of the Vihtavouri N530 and Accurate 2460 was perfect. The IMR4166 ran out of room at 38 gr. and didn't make much velocity.

N530

36 gr. - 2677
38 gr. - 2795
39 gr. - 2816 (velocity per grain leveling off)

AA2460

39 gr. - 2741
40 gr. - 2793
41 gr. - 2844

N201

37 gr. - 2674
39 gr. - 2789

IMR4166

38 gr. - 2603

What kind of bullet path do you have shooting a 30.30 600 yds.
I'm sure it's a laugh but is there any control that's meaningful?

I have a lever action (my first rifle 1973).
I've never thought to try to shoot it 600yds.
Be like using a hp sling shot is my thinking.

If it shoots a 168 at 2800, there won’t be any problem at 600 yards. Nothing slingshot-ish about it.
I do find the velocity numbers surprising.

You might want to run those speeds through your QuickLoad and then tell me what it sez. Michael Turner is the fellow heading up the project for my bud. Michael has a very very competitive short range Bench Rest rifle. He has sent a lot of BR shooters home with their tails tucked between their legs.
They ain't shooting your Grand Pa's model 94 in Thuty-Thuty.

Ok maybe I'm confused. We taking Short range or 600 yds ? We talking 30.30 or 30 cal bolt rifle ?
No need to be condescending I'm not being that way. I suppose I want to break out my old rifles that haven't seen the light of day in 20+ years.

Butch is talking about a 30-30, but not a lever gun. You are not confused, the final product will be a bolt gun 30-30 to be used in mid range matches, mostly 600 yards, and maybe occasional 1000 yards.

I'm sure Bamban will post photos when the rifle is in his hands. JMayo, we're talking both short and long range. It is a 30-30 bolt rifle that he uses for short range BR. Bamban's rifle will be a bolt rifle in Thuty-Thuty. The velocity testing is being done with Michael's Ruger #1.

It's never been a question of whether or not the 30-30 has the case capacity to do it. It's only been a question of whether or not the rifle and/or case could hold the pressure.
I've seen people hop up Savage 30-30 bolt actions before.

Have fun with it! I'd consider AIing it just to help cut case stretch.

Saw a target shot by my gunsmith Friday
30 marlin lever gun shot @100 yards sub .5"

Michael did some proof testing of 30-30 brass using his own massive machined proof test receiver and a proof barrel, firing the same case at proof load, I believe was 30 times, brass survived.

The final product will be in a MCS action by Mo Defina. That action is pretty stout with an obnoxiously long tenon - around 2 inches.

Nez, what brass are you guys using?

A believe he has been talking about a bolt action, bench rifle in 30-30 caliber. The 30-30 is a good cartridge and has way more potential than most give it credit for, as they only think of it in a lever action carbine.
