re using barrels

Disclaimer: I know very little about shooting nothing about gunsmithing and even less about making barrels.
So here's my question
I've herd a lot of gunsmiths say the steel quality makes the barrel and a lot of good shooters say the same . So is it possible to take a known excellent 6mm barrel that's shot out send it back to maker and make it a 30 cal or 7? That way u have a known good piece of steel. I.e make a old 6dasher into a 300wsm using a hv contour. Or a killer 30 br even if u had to have it turned down. I don't know if it would be possible or worth it? Just wondering. Thanks Jimmy.

Not just a good shooting 6mm barrel but one of these so called " hummer" barrels. A word record setting once in a lifetime barrel. One that can turn a 1000yd court gesture into king Arthur overnight type barrel. One of those to re use.

I doubt that anyone (barrel maker) would do it. There are guys who re-bored barrels and rifle them but usually they are on old firearms that the owner wants to keep the original barrel on.

I'm guessing it will be like any other barrel where you rolls the dice as to it being a hummer again after re drilled, rifled and lapped.
I found a guy that does it. It was around $250, so may save a coin.
Ill see if I can find him.

I think Butch Lambert turned me on to this guy.

yes possible but definitely not wort it--unless your great grandpa mined the ore, and made the steel in a secret crucible deep in a underground lair giving it excalibur-like qualities. yanking your chain--get a new one
Funny^^^^

Yeah...get a new one.

Re-boring barrels is a thriving business here in the U.S. It is so popular right now that every shop which offers this service is swamped with orders.

But that is not a advocating the idea that you can accomplish another hummer by using an original hummer just for the steel. There is a lot more to barrel making than using good steel and that's where the suggestion often goes awry. Nearly every steel supplier claims to be producing 416R for barrel making so technically all steel should be the same. However, the barrel maker has several steps involved in the machining of the barrel. Then the gunsmith has to provide his expertise and finally the shooter has to work up a load suited to the barrel. Who or how was this hummer actually made?;)

Just wondering if anyone has thought of this. I know it's a wild question but had to ask. I do believe these kind of barrels exist. 10 years ago I laughed at people talking about once in a lifetime barrels.

true--usually put liners in .22s

My thinking is barrel that has been used
Could have different metal structures at the chamber area then the rest of the barrel
Just that reason I wouldn’t have it done
By. The time you pay for chambering and re working the barrel the price would be the same

I have one of those--I just set it back once though. -- a true "hummer" at least in my book...

I wonder how many hummer barrels are really made. Most of them never see an owner that would wring out the accuracy anyways

Out of the hundreds of barrels tony boyer has went thru i think hes had 2. Ive seen one in my 20+ yrs of br and thats people that go thru a loooot of barrels. Hummer gets tossed around a lot but when you say once in a lifetime thats knowing a hundred folks that go thru a lot of barrels, there may be one in the whole crowd in a lifetime. When i see hummer tossed around i just laugh. If it was a true hummer youd win every match you went to and it would last about twice as long as normal
