Benchrest Barrels - New Stuff

Hey what can you guys tell me about a mike rock barrel. I have the opportunity to get one at a pretty decent price for my .308, and I don't know much about them. Help me if you can. thanks....

Asreder,

Rock makes some mighty fine bbls... Have had two of them both in .308's on 700's... They both shot lights out...

I just got into custom guns a couple years ago.The only barrel Ive dealt with so far is a Lilja .30 cal,3 groove,1-11".The difference between it and production barrels Ive had is like day and night especially when it comes to cleaning.I tried the break in routine for about 30 rnds. and really didnt see the sense in it.All the production guns Ive owned you could clean and clean but still get light blue patches coming out,not so with the lilja.Ive got another for a 6mm project and was thinking of trying a Broughton 5C for another .30 cal project.

Stephen,
If you are going to disagree wit what I have written, make sure that you have read it correctly. I most assuredly did not write that the average life of a Benchrest barrel is 1,000 rounds. You are right about one thing. You have shot a lot more matches than I, although I do seem to remember a couple where I placed higher than you did. I must have been lucky. As to competitive Benchrest barrel life, I would rather learn from Tony Boyer. Do you remember what he has said on the topic. How is the Angeles range project coming along? You have surely had a lot of stick to it on that one. It is to be admired.

Great post keep it going'
Take it easy and anyone can make a typo.
I have shot several brands of barrels Douglas when the original owner GR was alive. i can say that they have changed quite a bit. Harts really fine quality.
Lilja really good close or just as good as a Hart. Shillen Very good Bartlein excellent for a cut rifle barrel
Thats about it for me i can honestly say none have failed to shoot for me.
All Have given me great groups in short range
The one thing thats really important is the gun smith.
If you have the absolute best barrel made it won't shoot for you if it is not Smithed properly. That,s just as important.

You asked about Bartlien i shoot 600yds IBS Benchrest . I have shot Shilen ,Krieger,Broughton ,Douglas and Bartlien barrels in competiton . Have won or placed with all these barrels . In the last 6 months I have had one gun that shot fairly consistent and has keep me in contention, it has a Bartlien barrel . I shoot light and heavy class both chambered for a round i developed . One gun shoots probably better than i am capable of and can deliver low to mid 1.5" groups at 600yd.. The other rifle I had 700 rds.in it just could not get to group under 5.5". I took the barrel off and replaced it nothing else changed . I bought a used barrel off the for sale sight here, chambered it for the fore mention cartridge. The guns first group at 600yds. 2.135 with four shots falling in .875. it is now capable of shooting good groups at 600yds. . Oh yes it is a Bartlien barrel .
The Rifler
P.S. i have 2220 rds. in gun #1 and it still shoots good enough for me to place and win.

Here in our shop in South Dakota, Lilja is our choice. The barrels are easy to machine and are very accurate. Dan is only a phone call away and is easy to talk to and will answer any concern. He also offers the best volume discount per barrel. We also use a number of kriegers with very good results.
How about Brux no experience with them?

when i rebarrel, i choose a different barrel manufacturer each time. i like to try them all. but, you can not judge a barrel manufacturer from using just one of their barrels, you need to shoot several of their barrels. remember, even the top names in barrel making do make barrels that won't shoot and you can not let that put a bad taste in your mouth towards that company. A friend of mine at work has competed in high power for many years and shoots nothing but krieger. he has had some krieger barrels that wouldn't shoot, but almost all would. i tend to like variety, as my next barrel might be a brux, or spencer, or schneider, obermeyer, lilja, benchmark, broughton, bartlein, badger, hart, satern, mike rock............there are so many to choose from. i have shot several hart barrels and they have all hammered. read what the top shooters are shooting and try one of those barrels if you havent yet.

This is a little off topic but wanted to share some thoughts.

The shooting enthusiast who is interested in building custom guns has many options that are good in the selection of most of the components. A number of great barrel manufactures both for those who like cut-rifles and button-rifled barrels. Then think about the large number of custom action manufactures and good gunsmiths who can true up Rem 700's.

If you want small groups or high scres we live in a great time.

Just my two cents,

Re: Benchrest Barrels - Break In

Stephen,

I have had good luck with new barrels that I have hand lapped. Cuts down major on the time to break in the barrel. I lap from the bolt end with 800 non embedding compound from Brownells, clean with Koil and then with JB bore paste. Finish with Koil till clean.

Then I shoot one and clean with bore paste. Shoot three and clean with bore paste. Usually this does it and the barrel starts to shoot. Why waste bullets and barrel life?
