Most People Are Fooling Themselves.....

So my yard has been wikkid noisy the last few weeks..... perty much every nite there's someone "sighting in for hunting season" and/or "checking their zero"

A few are trying out the 450 and 600yd targets to "find out if the marks in my custom turret are accurate"

They're all shooting factory rifles with factory ammo because "they don't have time to get into reloading....."

And most of them call me about an hour after dark on their way driving home and ask "what do you think the problem is with my......???" whatever

And "do you think we could fix this before hunting season?" because "600yds...."

It's depressing.

On every modern hunting show "600yds" is a chip shot...

All the guns "tested" in the glossy mags shoot "1/2moa with XXX ammunition"

On the forums and blogs EVERYBODY ELSE can get their gun to shoot "1/4 minute" by just squidging the whojummawhat'chit a fuzz-lick to the left......

I LIVE ON A RANGE.....

I BUILD CUSTOM RIFLES!!

WHY is it so hard for ME to "get any bullet to shoot" and to "tune any barrel" or to "find that magical factory ammo that shoots everything into 1/2 inch "when I do my part???"

I'm headed down the range in about 15 minutes to engage in hand-to-hand with a certain rifle I'm fighting to waterline..... there ain't nuttin' ON IT that's factory..... ain't nuttin' ON IT that didn't cost hunnerds of dollars......and it ain't shootin' 1/4moa at 600 (bugholess at 100 BTW....ES in the dust on the floor...)

.....and since it's a one-off I can't even go down to Walmart and get any magical factory loads from the chart in OL, LOL

I'm probably gonna' have to re-cut the throat, I'm trying several bullets of which I've only got a few hunnerd left cuz I'm friggin' DESPERATE.....I'll be going down my list of "stuff" before setting aside a BRAND NEW Krieger (which will probably bughole on another platform.....)

OK

Rant OFF ;)

Just prep'ing for battle

I ain't even asking for help, just venting a liddle!

I’m my modest observations I’ve sensed the same problems /happenings. Recutting the throat does seem practical in that situation. After talking to a lot of hunters (I now work in a place that sells guns and hunting licenses and I am a human polling machine) I suspect that it’s an epidemic of over confidence or lack of understanding. They buy 2 boxes of hunting rounds with different weight and style I’d say are good at 200 yards tops (personal Use). One guy asked me if an “ak” is good for hunting at 500 yards and which of our 2 boxes of 7.62 fmj rounds would be best, I tried helping the situation... Then I wonder how are they going to sight in for 600 yards and have enough rounds for hunting with just one box. I have seen air guns that shoot say 1.5 inch at 25 yards with a bunch of different pellets then you put the right type of pellet in and it goes to .2s but I suspect that dramatic changes at 100 are a little tougher with a cf.

Every one of my F-Open rifles are full-blown custom rigs. Most will shoot very well. From time to time I get a barrel that is very finicky! It takes a bit of work to get it to shoot good enough for competition. There are some barrels that simply will NEVER shoot to a competitive level. Then there are those few that shoot well with just about anything! However, MOST barrels with a little work will shoot very well. I believe these are the majority of barrels we get from the custom barrel makers. My MOST accurate 6mm Dasher was with a VERY finicky barrel. I was about to give up BUT I tried VV N540 with Berger 105 VLDs jammed 12 thousandths. I try not to use double based powders because they are generally temp sensitive and like N540 will eat a throat up like candy. This one was no different. However, it shot unbelievably well! Those 105s with 33.0grs of N540 were sailing out at 3070f.p.s.! Unless the winds were stupid, I would shoot 596-599 with 35+ X counts at 600 yards! My best score with that rifle at 600 yards was 599-43X! And to think I almost gave up on it! I had a .308 that was not a competition rifle. However, no matter what I put down the barrel, it shot incredibly well! At 300 yards there was almost never a time I shot it where at least three, if not all five, of the bullets were overlapping each other shooting well under 1"! Barrels will be barrels!

“When I do my part...”. The issue here is ego. No person wants to be seen as a less than shot. Unfortunately it takes a LOT of work to become an adequate shot and a “METRIC CRAP TON” to become a “1/4 inch shot”. Most neither have the time or money to become a shooter at that level. So they give the above excuse, chuff out their chest and believe in the tooth fairy.

It also takes a ton of money to get a rifle even capable of being a 1/4 inch rifle. The average RemSavchester is at best a one minute rifle. Add premium factory ammunition and you’re lucky if it holds a minute and a quarter. Good luck with WalMart ammo. You might get it to be a 3/4 minute gun if you have it expertly bedded and a good trigger installed, but just barely.

Show up on a range with an honest to God precision rifle and these guys all find that they need to go home and mow the lawn.

I was at the range this week. I'm retired and have the luxury of shooting on weekdays when the crowds are minimal. So, this this other old guy at the far end is messing with a couple different hunting rifles. After a while he wants to check targets. We're walking out to the 100 and he asks if I have any 3-in-1 oil? I say , "no, but what's up?" He said that his 40 year old Tasco won't adjust and he wanted to oil it. It's hunting season and now it starts.

I find it easy to tell if it's me or the equipment when things are not going the way I want, most of the times it's me . I wish I was perfect but as long as I have fun striving for that I am happy.

I started on a friend of mine in February to get his rifle to me. I knew that he was a drag a$$, so I told him to not hunt me down in September looking for help. I reminded him in April and again in May. I haven't seen him yet.

come on Al, you know if it came from Walmart it's got to be great
OMG that is so true! We have a guy at our range and everything he shoots came from Walmart and even has a scope on it from Walmart and he get so frustrated that he can not ever get anything to shoot well enough to get off the 100yd range and move up to the 200 or 300 range.

My thoughts,
No substitute for time on the range. Work out the bugs. Learn what shots you can and can't take.
Best to go with someone who has worked out some or most of the problems.
Long range hunting is the current fad promoted by the hunting shows. Two hundred yard shots are still most hunters best bet.
I have a laser RF verified, witnessed 1121 prairie dog kill. It didn't come quick or easy and we worked up to it. It was a custom rifle with lots of range time in it.

I met a guy last year who claimed to have never shot at paper. He said that if he could hit a milk jug at 200 yards he could kill a deer ar any range the he hunted. You just can’t argue with logic like that......lol

Half or whole gallon?:) Along those lines, I saw a guy, with his deer gun, trying to shoot minute of old Christmas tree balls. He wasn't having much luck.

Some of the things I have seen at my range in the the last few years make me not go on the few hours a week it's open to the public.... From people walking in front of me on a hot firing line to a 12 year veteran active military personnel who don't know how to operate the AR platform.... In his defense he was a Chaplin... Strange how 400 members can make it work , no problem but the times non members are there , theres new holes in the roofs etc... I personally wish they would close to the public and just raise the yearly dues....

Never got into the milk jug thing. We would hang cantaloupes and honeydew melons in mesh netting from limbs and the arms on cactus. The produce department would give us the melons that were ready to be discarded.
