Good People

Seems like we read about bad dealings too often so I just wanted to pass along a good experience. I decided to build a 6 Dasher prone rifle, a sort've "do it all" type of build. After some thought, and a few emails, I bought a Bartlein barrel blank from AR-X Enterprises, and had it shipped to Pierce Engineering. AR-X had a good price, shipped promptly, and communicated well. Pierce had a single shot action "about a week from being done" that they reserved for me, and I had them chamber the barrel in 6 Dasher (.269 neck, .104 freebore) and install it on the action. They also ceracoated everything, and supplied a 10MOA rail and bottom metal. Well, no more than about 2.5 weeks after getting the ball rolling, the barreled action arrived at my FFL. I have the rifle put together and have been fireforming brass and trying a few different loads. So far, it looks promising. This is the second barrel that I've had Pierce chamber for me, the first job was equally fast. That one is a 6 Dasher bench rifle, same chamber spec, and it is a HAMMER. I have no affiliation with these folks other than being a happy customer.

It truly is good to hear of good dealings as there is too much negativism on this site lately with bad deals going down and then the seller all but disappears. It is so sad that a few bad guys get us once in awhile and I am getting leery of buying from first time posters with no references.I am really glad that pierce did you well and you are very happy with their work.Perhaps you could post a pic or two of your new and the last one they built for you.

I have known John Pierce for a long time, and they don't get any better than him. Glad your new toy is such a delight.

Jon, here's a pic. I put the action into a Bobby Hart LRT stock from Stocky's. It has an aluminum bedding block. I was a little concerned about the beavertail shape not being great for sling shooting, but it fits my hand well, especially since I inletted a Freeland rail and installed the Anschutz hand stop. It's very comfortable. I need to work on the cheekpiece hardware, it's a little bit janky. I've been shooting off a bipod w/a scope doing the brass forming and load checking. It's pretty much a "ragged hole" rifle other than the trigger nut coming loose occasionally, you know what I mean. At some point I may turn the end of the barrel and install iron sights (Phoenix) but for now it's going to be an NRA "any sight" rifle and serve as my long range coyote/g-hog gun. I'm moving to all R700 clone stuff, with the idea being I can mix and match hardware. IE I can drop my 700VS .308 action into this stock, or this action into my bench stock, etc.

jhord, I've been trying to pick an action for basically the same thing, a 600-1000 prone iron/scope gun for triple 600 matches etc. But seems I can't find a 700 clone with the rear site base holes. Pierce and Stillar don't have them and they don't seem to be able to drill and tap them. Warner makes an expensive rear scope hole mount for rear irons but I reluctant to spend all that when I have a bunch of the regular bases onhand. How are you going to mount a read site? I too was thinking of having the action maker set up a barrel while they had the action inhand but Stiller says they are no longer accepting barrel jobs due to time constraints. I may just end using another good old Rem 700.

Amen, jhord. I have heard nothing but good about John's work and hope to send some work his way on a future project. It's good to see excellent work praised!

Although I spoke up about a recent bad transaction, I also believe in praising the exceptional ones as well. I still say shooters are, as a whole, among the most honorable of men. Good on you, sir!

Here is my attaboy:

Known John Pierce for quite a while. Bought an action from him for a 6.5X47Lapua.

He has done wire EDM for me and I just bought one of his titanium receivers. He is great to deal with.

There's many fine people on this site and I have really run into an exceptional number. I needed gunsmithing work done on a 30BR I am working on. Site member 'Therifler' (gunsmith in Pa.) was one of these fine individuals. Did great work for me, was very fairly priced, and stayed right to his predicted time estimate. It gets better....he spent over an hour on the phone with me because of my inability to understand another problem I was having. Patient. Courteous. Really, I don't think it gets better.

One fine looking rifle. Great job in paicking components too. Thanks for the pic as it is always nice to see it for real.
