Carbon removal test. Barrel Damage Test.

Might as well save a few bucks and use Bar Keepers Friend liquid. Works much like CLR and will remove the loose carbon fouling in the barrel. Then again, so will alcohol, after-shave lotion, etc:D A mixture of baking soda and vinegar will also do the cleaning.

I have tried almost every cleaner mentioned in this thread and then some.

While a new barrel may clean up with only patches, well worn barrels call for a bronze brush and/or JB paste (substitute your favorite abrasive cleaner.)

I absolutely cannot keep a barrel shooting tiny groups without the use of brushes or abrasives after the first 1/4 or so of its life is gone.

I could probably do it cleaning every 6 shots like in short range, but generally I clean every 50 rounds and I would really like to see some actual groups from some of the “I clean my Creed every 5-700 rounds” crowd.

Which cleaner works best on copper?
I've tried a few and Hoppes #9 was the slowest. Sweets is better but KG12 is pretty damn good.
For copper you mustn't let the layers get too thick so address it as soon as you can to prevent needing to do a 1/2 day job.
Hoppes #9 is still a good GP carbon and rifle wipe down solvent, just not not for copper.

I think I will do a barrel test tomorrow. Put these cleaners on the outside and let them sit for an hour and see what happens. Stainless and chrome moly.
please tell us these are older barrels,,and let us know what they look like afterward ,

I'll just try the ones with the warnings on them, plus the CLR. I am sure that Hoppe's and Wipeout won't hurt a thing. I used hot glue to make the dividers.

Why do that to a good barrel , CLR & Sweets for sure will harm the steel if left on too long , maybe all of them will . Water for that matter will screw up steel . With any type of cleaning caution and common sense . Next test is how to repair the problem marks that chemicals make.

One hour in and not much more seems to have happened. The Sweets seem to have dried up.

I like learning. I don't think it is going to do a bit of damage that will keep the barrel from shooting.

This is the best picture I think I could get of the "after damage". Everything but the CLR looks perfect to me. I will now CLR the entire section, and redo the three cleaners on bare steel.

Why didn't someone tell me to shut the flash off? A lot better pictures.

Used CLR to clean the barrel of bluing for the next test.
