So this is more of a gripe, but I recently ran across what appears to be a decent 13X25" Harrison M300 lathe. Looks like a nice machine to do some barrel work on. I inquired about it, and noticed the guy had some gunsmithing stuff sitting around in the photos. I asked about it and he said he built and sold to friends. I mentioned I'de be interested in the lathe and the tooling, and keep what I wanted to sell the rest. (didn't mention I would sell the extras off)
I, technically at one time was considered a gunsmith, I worked in a full time shop, building F-class, and custom hunting rifles. I have not done it for a few years, but still build stuff for myself. I had a great teacher who was an accomplished BR builder and shooter in his day. To the point, I can build myself a very accurate rifle. About 6 months ago I sold my old restored SB Hvy 10 and my SB 13x40 to fund a business purchase, so here I am today looking for a replacement.
I asked the guy about the bed length because it wasn't noted in the ad and it was hard to tell from the photo. I said I wanted to be able to contour, polish, etc. He proceeded to tell me that this is impractical and everything must be done through the headstock. I said, OK, just tell me the between centers length.
He then went into a rant about I've built 12 rifles, and they are X accurate and asked if I knew what a spider was. Being I've built about 10 of them for myself and friends, I think I know. So I mentioned I use to work in a shop building custom rifles and just needed to know the Centers distance.
I told him they made a 25" and a 40" center to center version and he said, look it up and "figure it out", "GOOD BYE"!
That is the abbreviated version, but what's wrong with people. Why the ego when you've only built a couple rifles thinking that your way is the only way. I've seen and shot some very accurate BR rifles done with a steady. I do most of my barrels today through the head stock, but who cares!
To top that off, about 1 hour after finishing talking with the guy, one of my more popular videos on youtube which was highlighted on the Daily bulletin here a few months ago received a notice that it's no longer suitable for advertisers after 250K views. Not sure if he figured out who I was and flagged it, but what a coincidence.
