barrel toast before it starts?

I'm sorry, I'll disagree. As mentioned earlier, it is probably from the reamer fluff in the throat from chambering. I've stated here many times as how to fix it.
Tubb's TMs is for this, and for uneven leade erosion down the road, and it hurts nothing at all. It's similar in function to responsible use of JB's bore compound. Perfect for break-in.

Ill disagree here. Firing an abrasive down a barrel is not even close to jb on a cleaning rod and shouldnt be used on any type of quality barrel. If you have a barrel rough enough to need to firelap it with abrasives just get another barrel. Jb is used on 99% of match winning barrels in every discipline- lapping bullets are not at all.
