Colorado Springs varmint hunting spots

Hey guys,

I will be moving from South Africa to Colorado Springs in December. Does anybody maybe have any pointers or guidance as to the best spots for varminting in that area? From prairie dogs to coyoytes......not fussy.....just want to send some lead to some form of varmint.

Thanks in advance guys.

Welcome,
If you look over on Saubier.com, there is currently a thread on someone leaving
California and moving to Colorado and looking for places to hunt varmints. Lots
of information on that site concerning what you seek.

Years ago, a man named Monte Nolder guided hunters (prairie dogs) in the Lamar, CO area. Lamar is in extreme SE Colorado. I am not sure that he still does this since I haven't shot pd's in years. James

Thanks for the info James.

Once I am boots on the ground in CO I will sure be getting a better feel for the area.

Thanks for everybody's input .....hope to see some of you guys in field one of these days. Us South Africans are very outdoors kind of guys.

Just jump on highway 24 or 96 eastbound and look for someone to chat with. Might get lucky and find an owner willing to let you shoot their varmints.

I hear the Pawnee grasslands have some pd’s and I’m sure a few coyotes too. These public grasslands are in northern and southern Colorado.
I believe you need to live in Colorado six months to get resident status and if you were born after 1948 you will need to show a hunter safety course has been taken,I took my daughter to the Springs area to get hers done for 4H,very nice folks taught the class.Once you are settled and feel like venturing north a little Wyoming doesn’t require a license to shoot varmints, they have a bunch of areas open to the public too.I bet with your Dutch accent you will have no trouble striking up conversations and making friends.Welcome aboard,I wish you all the best, just watch out for the nutty drivers around Colorado :D

Hunter safety courses in CO used to be 13 hrs long broke down into three sessions. I took one in the springs back in the early 90's. Used to be out on the Air Force Academy, but a lot has changed since then.

Thanks you so much to everybody for their input.......Thanks Matt - the Dutch accent can be an asset at times, like you said.

Kind regards to all

Very polite also. Nice intro. Welcome to the States.

A couple of years ago I took the on-line CO hunter safety program (it was my forth time going through some sort of hunter safety). After successfully completing the on-line portion of the program, you attend a class that lasts about 5 hours and includes the shooting portion. Easier for the folks that have trouble spending so much time in class.

An added bonus is the CO hunter safety fulfills the training requirement for concealed carry.

Welcome aboard! I keep up a lot with the politics of South Africa. How and why the western media ignores and condones what's going on there is alarming. You picked a good time to leave! Although parts of CO has a large number of Muslims form Somalia. (Somalia Pirates). The 'Kill The Boers' song and dance is there for all to see. Good luck!

Welcome! My closest friends are from SA via Zim and knowing them has opened up my eyes to a world I never knew existed. Assume you will be making yourself aware of the various laws regarding citizenship, firearms possession etc (I have no idea on that matter) and will be enjoying the vast western states. I too think your accent will help in ways you never imagined. It was one of the charming things that drew me to get to know my friends when they first arrived in the States. Welcome aboard.

The easiest way to get access in a new area is go to a local café and talk to the customers. Most are very willing to allow a person to shoot coyotes or PD.

Welcome MR De Lang. A friend of mine deals with a lot of overseas hunters in this country. He's also hunted Africa quite frequently. As to the gun laws, according to him, most outfitters will lend/rent a gun/rifle to visiting hunters. This is a route you may choose to take after initially arriving here.. Again l say
