Dad and I scouted out some new MT spots in June cause plague seems to be moving into our normal area of SD. Found really good shooting. Sent about 800 rounds in three days of “scouting” where we shot for only a few hours per day.
Had a great time trying out the new Ruger 17 WSM. Impressed with the results on dogs. A big step up from the 17 HMR.
We are pretty well prepared for the big trip in July, except we are expecting a lot of hot sun, so barrel cooling apparatuses will be mandatory!

Which Ruger are you shooting, the 24"? I see they have a 20" in a blued version. Wondering how much velocity loss in the four inches.

Nice setup. I think I would have my bench pulled back to utilize the little shade your Gator provides.

We take two nearly identical gators on the big trip. 4x8 plywood is great addition to take a break out of the sun, and we also have umbrellas for the benches.

I have not tried the heavier 25 gr bullets yet. Been shooting the 20 gr to get velocity. Chronographed right at 3000 in the 24” barrel. Does not like the American Eagle ammo, but shoots the Winchester pretty good.

Really like the 17WSM relative to the HMR. Preference is the 25 grain bullets. Does a great job on the p-dogs. Like the idea of the gator. Just can carry everything in a Suburban and more.
