6BR Seating Depth/Charge test

OK I have been of the OCW school for many years. Run an OCW test find the node and then fine tune by seating depth. Recently I decided to try the Boyer method on a relatively new 6BR that I am having trouble getting it dialed in. Lapua Brass, Berger 105 Hybrid, Varget, CCI-450. I set up the test below to run loads 30.0, 30.3, 30.6, 30.9 and depths of .010 in the lands, .005 in the lands, 0 (touch) and .005 jump.

I'm sorry but I just don't see anything that I can say, yeah thats it right there. Anybody with experience, please feel free to tell me what you see.

I’m gonna make a suggestion, I’m sure others will chime in...ditch the hybrids...try some vlds or 108hp...or try 8208 or Rl 15

What twist? I assume 8? I had to switch to H4895 and about .012” off with hybrids and getting consistent 5/8” groups at 200yrds.
Going to try the 108’s

Well, I see +5 an0d 30.0 and -5 and 30.9 as being quite good places to start. Change the seating depth by smaller increments and see what happens around these two points (2 or 3 thou changes). HTH

I agree with Shooter! Try another bullet. However your +5 looks the most promising as far as seating depth.

I got the Hybrids to shoot in an 8tw but the 105 Huntings shot better, maybe try more jump with Hybrids mine liked .015” jump.
Sierra 107s were the best bullet I’ve used in 6br not including customs.

Have you tried the 108 hybrid? Much easier to tune

Yep I'm willing to change it up with different bullets/powder. I have Berger 105 VLD's and the 108's so I can try them. Its just that this combo (30.0gr Varget and Berger 105 Hybrid) seems to be the go to standard for 6BR. Seems to work for a lot of people.

My understanding of the Boyer method is that there should be a seating depth that performs well across multiple charges. I see some hope at 0 to .005 in at 30.0 gr. But t does not show up at any of the other charges at those depths.

My 6br loves the 107's also. Don't rule anything out I dumped the 450's for BR4's and it cut the groups in half and became extremely consistent. Berger 105's never settled in.
In my 6.5x47L Hybrids area insanely accurate the combo shoots better than I can steer it.

Yes testing is the key to success..

Testing different components is the only way you’ll know what works best with your set up. 107 Sierras, 30gns Varget with CCI450 or CCI BR primers is a fairly well known load for 8tw BR. Mine have liked between 5 to 15 jump.

I got the 105 hybrids to shoot in an 8 twist 6br with 30.4 gr varget jumping .05. However it took a lot of tuning to get it right. With the 108s they shoot the same group size but the tune hardly seems to matter. Different seating depths and even powder charges all hold roughly similar groups and even have a very close vertical across different loadings.
The 105s were much more finicky.

Plus 10 with 30.3 and -5 with 30.9 would be acceptable places to start in my opinion. I would load 3 or 4 of each and go to 300 yds. One of those two will tell you a lot more.

Its possible for this bullet to need as much as
.020 jump. But it will shoot. LDS

From reading another post, I'm thinking that some of that vertical (which there is a lot of) might be from my front rest setup (SEB NEO) or my rear bag or both.

Yeah, overall I think hybrids need more jump, and for the most part br4 primers. VLD's like the jam. Lots of good info so far, hope it helps.p

30.3, +.010. read the wind for horizontal. I WILL say that's it right there. Your criteria may differ.
Shoot a good consistant tight group and go compete with it. If you are not into competition, then never mind

I think this is a trap we can fall into from time to time, I admit I certainly have in the past.

The combo doesn't seem to be working for you and your barrel and that is all that matters. Ive wasted too much barrel life in the past persevering with what shot well for others instead of trying to find what shot well for my barrel and me.

I'm going to work around that and see what happens. I do compete (just started last month) and have a match on 10 days.
