BRA Does NOT Guarantee "Harry" a World Record

Hi Larry,

For those who have struggled at times with the 6BRA I would be grateful if you could share how your journey has went since posting this initial thread. I was very grateful that you shared your initial difficult experiences and I would be equally grateful to hear of any success you are now having and what changes have brought this about?

We are all here to share and learn :)

Quick update for you about my 6BRA that i couldn't get consistent results out of
i finally got time to take my barrel into my gunsmith (as i went back to 6BRX) and he looked down the Krieger barrel that was only 900 rounds old of me trying to find a load and the 1st 4 inches were cracked big time
he then looked down my 6BRX Krieger barrel which had 1700 rounds down it and it only had cracking in the 1st inch and it wasn't that bad
so in short the reasons for all my troubles was a crap barrel , i have a new barrel being chambered as we speak in 6BRA so i get to try again

Postscript on this. I re-barrelled that BRA rifle Alex built for me. After speed-up at about 25 rds., I found a couple nice Varget loads making one hole at 100 yards. Went to the 600 yard range and started testing. With less than 80 rds on that barrel, I stopped and feel ready for Ga. in October. Multiple 1.1" groups and one .8" one at 600 on the notorious Manatee mirage range. Easiest tuning I ever did.

Using 108 Bergers as Bart has been near 4 months with no notice he has anything for me.

Liked the results so much I just put another new BRA barrel on one of my Dashers.
Go figure,
Do you feel that with only 80 rounds your barrel is as fast as it will get?
Just Curious

This is why you have to develop a load, not just try what "Tom" was shooting, except with a different lot of powder, primers, and bullet make and model. It's a good thing you wasted a barrel before trying a different combination, it's how we learn. It would be nice to come set the record straight though, funny how people have a big mouthful to say.....And then silence once they figure out the problem was they're own tuning regimen.

And btw, nothing "guarantees" Harry of anything. Harry has to earn it. Harry has to do his work. Harry has to be smarter than the tool.

Tom

You mean i cant buy my way into fame and fortune?

Good question.

I stopped testing because my new Target Vision Camera failed me again and again. Sent it back to them and now awaiting a replacement. Way too hard to test when you can't see the results so far away. In another week or so I have a few loads to really "fine tune" at distance and will check if there is a "speed-up". Last Krieger in BRA took near 100 rds to do that speed-up. This one was horrible for copper fouling, taking 7 full hours of "one shot-clean" and then polish over 7 shots to clear. My newest Krieger took 9 shots and near 9 hours. Will soon find out how slow it is and how soon it speeds up. I had to do a serious Iosso/SolvoAuto Sol polishing on it also.

Guessing Krieger is not polishing their barrels well like they used to. Sure know my last new Krieger was a failure that I nursed for 800 rds and trashed. Yes - I do think this latest one should be a bit faster than it is but, like women, they are all different.

I wonder if a guy could use a Drone for that long range stuff instead of a target cam.
Anyone tried that yet?
A follow up question is - did you find a layer of Carbon under all that Copper fouling?
You can, if you land it and use just the camera. Battery will go dead quick hovering?

That would kinda cool to try out!
I use a camcorder with transmitter and receiver from a drone. With 12 volt batteries powering the setup it will go all day. Just need line of site for the signal to work . You can buy the receiver and transmitter for about $35.00 on eBay and it’s very easy to wire. I run either a 17” computer monitor or 8” backup camera monitor (which runs on12 volts) on the receiving end. That’s the one in the picture.

WELL WELL
Gents
I think we are on to something here!
Mike get your business hat on quick..

Way cheaper than spotting scopes
or target cams
Most people have camcorders at home which are no longer being used so building the setup is pretty cheep. I set the camera about 10 yards in front of the target which is 500 yards away and zoom in so the target fills the hole screen. It’s very clear. Great for recording your ladder testing as it can be played back to verify your shots when they land on top of each other. Much clearer than a spotting scope especially when there is a lot of mirage.

My problem, or should I say one of my many
problems! My LONG range steel is on the side of a hill that's NOT easy to get to.
My thought was a camera behind a spotting scope that could be set up a couple hundred yards away. Much easier.

We seriously are considering a landing pad.
Maybe an old spool. Problem, again one of many! When it came to hauling steel, setting T-posts, (36x36 steel ain't light!) It was Me!
I'm not so psyched about getting a spool or table up there!

The further away the camera is the more mirage will come into play. My camera has 25x optical zoom so it could be set further away from the target than I setup at . There may be a way to attach the setup to a spotting scope but I haven’t searched for any adapters as I didn’t need to go that route.

wow really , yeah my crappy Krieger was a pain to clean from early on, it took about 20 rounds to run in and it stopped speeding up at about 120 rounds (labradar on from 1st shot)
but it was a pain to clean than any other Krieger i have ever owned, my 1700 round 6BRX krieger was easier to clean than that krieger 6BRA that i couldn't get to work .. hope it wont be a sign with my new Krieger

My newest Krieger fought me today. 9 shots through it when I went to a private range for some real testing. Ran into slow results, proud primers, hideous grouping at 100 yards, speed-up, them the unreal - a "slow-down". Then proud primers like it was high pressure. Then no primer issues and higher speeds at lower powder charges. Bizarre behavior for the full 41 rds I tried today. Cleaned twice during the testing in the hope that I could find a problem. Found nothing.

At 50 rds through this barrel I ended the testing. Doing lots of measurements of cases, seating depths, studied out the barrel with borescope and no conclusions except I need more polishing and more shooting. Later next week or whenever. I have a club shoot tomorrow with another rifle.

I am posting this email from Captainmal because I feel like it could help someone struggling to tune. Its a great example of what most of have been though. I have a 338 edge that I fought with, powders, primers, seating, ext. I decided to try one last thing before pulling the barrel and it fixed that gun. It turned out to be one of the best shooting hunting rifles I have ever owned. I just was not seating the bullet where it needed to be. But MAN I was pissed, had I not tried a spot that I didnt think should work I would have pulled that barrel.

"Found something using Varget yesterday. Playing with new Target Vision camera and tried 4895 as usual in your BRA. Same old same old. Then tried Varget but not with Barts, Berger 108's. Wanted to do your .020" in but Steve told me it would pull if I had to remove cartridge. Had my portable press there and moved them in to a .010" jam.
At 31.8 gr. it started to "shoot" with a .7" group. At 32.0gr. I did a .5" group. Working as an RSO I held off but then the mirage got horrible with some gusts. Two more groups were each 1.5" at 600. All those are better than anything I ever did with 4895."
We did that; .015 jam and as hot as we did with a jump. 100yard targets, 600 yard targets, didn't matter shot little holes. Others said that wouldn't work and I hope they don't try it. Took 2 years of sliding around it and sliding up to it but it beckoned.

Well 6BRA take 2 is up and running.. I have been using some old 107gr serrias MK I have had for years sitting around to run in my barrel.. New barrel is another Krieger HV, 28" but this time I have gone 1:8 twist this time and not 1:7.5..
Just chucked a load together to run in of 30.6gr of 2206H/H4895 with the 107gr 0.013 jump with cci 450s
Did a few 1 shot cleans and 3 shot cleans then I did a 5 shot group and got this at 100m
0.5"
Then I did a 10 shot group and about 0.6"
Showing promise
Has already speed up a bit after 43 rounds
And 30.6gr approx 2900fps give or take
My 103gr copperheads have turned up just need to get 100 odd rounds on barrel now
