Cleaning brush question

I just got in a dozen "famous maker" bronze .22 cal. brushes. They are too tight and about bending my Dewey rod pushing them through the bore. I have no old one to compare the diameter. These caliper measure .235 up to .246 in the same package. The .235 one is the tight one I first tried.

What is the diameter of your new .22 cal. brushes?

whats your bore measure, might be trying to push to much diameter,,

It's an old favorite .22-250 being routinely cleaned after 100 rounds fired. Yep, some blood drawn, too. So I guess bore is the nominal .224 dia. These are quality...or was...brass core brushes.

sorry,Famous Maker has never been known as high quality,,

Sir, at a dollar fifty a pop I expect Famous Maker to deliver reasonably proper fitting brushes.:)

Seriously, I just measured four Russ Hayden brushes and they measured .237
I measured four Pro-Shot and they measured .238
You said you cleaned after 100 shots. To me that sounds like a cruddy barrel and constricted a bit.

Negative on the pre bore wetting. Dipped brush half length in Hoppe's #9 and started pushing through. Had not experienced such a tight fit in all the years cleaning this bore. Crud build up very possible, the load is 37.0 gr. IMR 4064, 52 Sierra HP. It was tight for all of the 5 each way passes. Next time I will try the wet patch pre soak method.

I sampled all 12 brushes as follows. All have a mic'd wire diameter of .0045. Overall diameters are 4@ .235...2@ .238...3@.240...3@ .247 That is a wide size spread to me in one .22 cal. marked package.

I have for sale a dozen new Famous Maker .22 cal. bronze brushes. Make me an offer.........:D

Try to wet the bore with at least one wet patch. It makes the carbon wet where the brush can get it easier. A dry brush in there, which is essentially what you have, is not going to clean or move easily. Its only mechanical action instead of chemical helping mechanical. I agree your brushes suck but thats beside the point. That 4064 is nasty and i bet if you pick your smallest brush, wet the bore good and sloppy, itll work just fine until you get better brushes. Call steve at benchrite- his brushes are good

I used wipe out on an ar today that sat for over a week. I wet patched it twice let it set 15-20 minutes. Ran 8 dry patches. Re wet agian let set another 15-20 minutes 3 patches n done
Lesson learned in short time being here.

Nothing wrong with the brushes. Try pushing several wet patches through bore and let it soften the crud before using the brushes. My .22 brushes measure about .240 when new.

I decided to repeat the cleaning process as recommended by you guys, only with an already clean bore. First I full length dunked the brushes in #9. I always use a bore guide for cleaning. The .235, .240 and the .247 dia's all felt the same but with a marked decrease in pushing pressure. More like normal to the unknown brand brushes I was used to. The bore was then patch dried.

I then pre soaked with wet patch and repeated the test with near same results. I would say that the brush diameters were within the manufacturers size tolerances for effectiveness. I will be pre soaking this bore from now on until the brushes are used up. More likely the M700 carbon barrel will give up first.

Most definitely the dry bore fouling was causing the strong resistance. Thumbs up for Famous Maker bore brushes.

Thanks to all.

I shoot short range BR and with either 6PPC or .30BR I never go 100 shots without cleaning. If you can avoid that 100 shot routine before cleaning, life would be simpler.

I am a user of bore tech Eliminator. They suggest using nylon brushes. No copper or brass so no false signs if copper contamination. Just follow their directions. Works great.
