Cheap-ish rimfire scope

Gents,

If this is better placed in the scope section, then forgive me, and I'll move it. I posted here because I am specifically looking for a rimfire scope. My "trainer" is a Ruger American rimfire. The scope I had on it was a tasco 1983 model. Holds zero and tracks but the glass has a dingy yellow cast to it. Thought I'd "upgrade with a more modern tasco but this 3-9 rimfire model won't focus. Of course, it's a $35 scope so not a surprise.

Please recommend a scope less than $150 ish that will work in the rimfire 3/8"dovetail rings. Target turrets not a requirement, neither is a special reticle. I mainly shoot this rifle in the backyard 80 yard rimfire range. Incidentally, it will keep all rounds regardless of brand around 1.5" at that range.

Thanks in advance

Vortex Diamondback HP 4-16x42 with BDC reticle. Focuses down to 30 yards. Clear and sharp for about $290. If you are adamant about $150-ish then look at Vortex Crossfire II 4-12x40.

Vortex crossfire 2... I have two and they work just fine and basically in your price range especially if you catch them on sale... A 6x18 AO on a tactical .308 and a 3x9 on a 10/22.... The 6x18 AO focuses down to 25 yards it would be awesome on a Rimfire but it is a bit large , cones with a nice metal sunshade... The 3x9 I just put on the 10/22 it also has return to zero turrets which I like on a Rimfire because you can sight it in with whatever ammo you like but if you have to change brands you can sight in , then simply turn the turrets back to zero when you go back to the ammo you like , that's CCI standered velocity for me...

Both the crossfire 2 I own are the non illuminated models , regular duplex... Go to academy or wherever and look through a few , modernization has improved scopes alot but right around the $150 mark is were you start... BTW the cross fires are made in China for vortex , they make no scopes in house... China , Philippines or Japan....Their warranty in great also , I haven't had to use it...

Target scopes designed for rimfire usually focus down to 10 yards or less and have high magnification.

I know a lot of guys use Nikko Stirling scopes for rimfire and air rifles. I've never used them but most seem to like the scopes.

^^^^^ I have the Nikon 3-9 on a Marlin 60 and like it a lot. Parralex (?) free at 50 yards with a BDC reticle.
Midway................90.00 ship free

My experience with Nikon on 22s has not been good - pay very close attention to the actual focus range of the parallax adjustment; mine will go back to Nikon one of these days when I remember to box it up, as it won't focus under 75 yards.

Not cool for a rimfire scope. Mine isn't a dedicated "tactical" or "target" rig, although I do practice positions with it a few times a week. This 22 doubles as a rabbit harvester and varmint eliminator, so a 75 yard parallax is a no go.

May want to consider a Sightron S1H series 4-12X40mm model 31017. Fully multi-coated optics, made in the Philippines, adjustable objective(8 yds to infinity), and a lifetime warranty.

PS: Spotted this one on Amazon(sold by Amazon, not Wholesale Hunter).

I had the same experience with the Nikon 4 x 12s...I adjusted my parallax down to 35 yards .Works great from up close out to about 60 yards now. Adjusting this style scope is easy and safe,no worries about screwing anything up . You can mark the factory setting with a pencil and go back to it at any time.

Two scopes — one brand new and one being discontinued:

— Vortex Diamondback HP 4-16x42 with finer BDC reticle. Focuses down to 30 yards and very sharp optics for a $300 scope. Some say Vortex is discontinuing it because it is cutting into sales of its Viper scopes and was threatening success of new Strike Eagle line. Amazon still has them but the price is going up.

— Leupold VX-Freedom EFR 3-9x33 with fine duplex reticle and a lot of adjustment in a 1-inch tune. Focuses down to 10 yards. Just hit market in late June and still relatively hard to find. Right at $300. Supposed to be brighter and sharper than its discontinued predecessor the VX-2 of the same ilk. Obviously aimed at the rimfire market.

Happy shopping.

  • I recently bought a Mueller APV 6-18 x 44 AO for one of my CZ's on sale direct from Mueller. It is a recent addition to their line and is on sale for$144.50. Made in China, of course (at this price what isn't), but a really nice scope regardless. Really good optics; clear, bright and sharp. If I remember correctly, shipping was free and it came with a lens shade too. Here's a link: http://muelleroptics.com/products/mueller-6-18x44-apv/

all depends on what you are going to use it for.
i have a huntsman (usual elcheapo brand name made by someone else) 4x32 scaope on my main 22 which cost $50nz. on the other 22 is a 4x40 tasco $200nz. the difference....the tasco is a bit brighter and clearer and has a lot finer crosshairs. however the huntsman does the job fine so why waste money on better scopes. the biggest problem i had was the scope mounts. i had to get a good set which cost more than the cheap scope !
