What is it about the .308 that makes it the best cartridge for any type of competition shooting?

I’ve heard the military has a cartridge that could beat the .308 at 1,000 yards, using half the powder.

The cartridge returns even better barrel life. Can be shot rapidly, - like machine gun fast.

This cartridge can beat the .308 AND open class guns at and under 600 yards.

Even kids can shoot it.

Well the 308 just trounced the Creed that's fer shure....... 4 pages ahead in post count and The Creedbaby is already faded to 3 pages back :)

if this new military round is even better, maybe 6.5 Creed will go away!

LOL

It will outlive the creedmoor. On first blush, (just ask any kid, as they speak the truth) it would seem impossible the two rival each other. The greatest competition cartridge ever devised is the one most used, already, the .223.

A .300 SAUM is exactly the height of the .308, just much fatter, and it trounces the .308, as expected. However, the .308 is both fatter and taller than the .223, with twice the capacity, yet has no clear on target advantage. The Floyd Mayweather of cartridges - running away in the earns its keep department is the .233.

The .223 is a cute little cartridge, and is indeed well suited for women, children, and recoil-sensitive millennial men. It just doesn’t have the magic of the .308, though.

Bin Laden said it was magical enough ;)).

308win takes his jet fuel with a side of coffee.
Creedmoor doesn't know what a coffee maker is, buys Starbuck's instead.

In International Palma matches, the governing body wanted everyone to shoot the same ammo. They used to make everyone shoot the same rifle, too. The reasoning was that would "level the playing field" because each rifle would shoot that lot of ammo equally precise. Therefore, the person with the best marksmanship skills and knowledge would always win. Nobody would have any ammo nor rifle accuracy advantage.

I think the last time the Int'l Palma Match required the same rifle be used by all was in 1976 when held in the USA and Winchester 70's shooting M118 match ammo was issued

Depending on current Palma match rules for the match, handloads and/or different cartridges can be used

I still have a Winchester ad for that very rifle...and I understand that those rifles were offered for sale to team members after the World's.

1999 was the final cycle for "issue ammo". They let us use our own rifles and a good percentage of our shooters used 3 or 4 lug actions, the theory being that they could shoot crooked ammo better than a 2-lug action. I did not try to quantify that between our shooters, but I do know that numerous team members medaled in individual events (out of 650 shooters...the largest World's ever) and some used 2-lug actions.

The folks on our team that used .3065" barrels had pressure issues, so they carried their daily allotment around in tiny coolers with cold paks and they also put moly grease on the bullet at the case mouth. Kind of a PITA. My only issue was a phantom bullet that went God only knows where during a shootoff. Luckily, it was my lone sighter shot and NOT one of my 3 record shots or I'd have never won the shootoff ;)

I learned at the 1988 and 1992 International Palma matches the first 4 lug actions (Swing) were so made in the early 70's so the out of square case heads on issued 7.62 M80 ammo would not string shots like 2 lug ones did.

I've shot three of them claimed having less than 1000 rounds through them. Used the same M118 Nat'l Match lot in all and they almost held the 20 inch 10 ring at a thousand. Sold both I had bought from someone and borrowed the third.

Two military guys that shot on that '76 team said the lot of ammo issued shot about 2 MOA at 1000 in all those rifles. It had tested about 1.7 MOA at Lake City ammo plant's 600 yard test range.

I helped develop the load using Sierra's first lot of 155 grain Palma bullets used in the 1992 Intl Palma match. It shot about 3 inches at 600 and under 10 at 1000 according to a few dozen top ranked competitors in a 4 day match in 1991. Got rave reviews from teams getting samples before the 1992 big event.
