All I can add is that it really depends upon where you go. Last year, on my Wyoming trip, I used all of the ground clearance my Dodge 2500 with 35" tires and 3" lift had. This year I went out to the west edge of Nebraska and they got 2" of rain the day before I got there. The roads to get to the good dogtowns are not paved, and many had no gravel. It took me over 1 1/2 hours to drive 25 miles on one road. I drove thru 20-30 places with standing water from 50-400' long and some places the water was almost up to my doors . If you are getting this for your adventures, make sure it will get you where your trying to go. My Dodge/Cummins averaged right around 19 for the trip. Last year if I had a Forester I would have limited my hunting to about 1/3 of the area I was able to hunt. I had to cross the Cheyene river that was up to my doors, and cattle crossings that were close to dragging. This year I would have been screwed, and could not have got to either ranch I hunted.

if you buy 10 yr old beast, just using the unspent money on gas.
i have gone most the places my f150 4x4 have gone, but we were in wet clay mud once
and real 4x4 was the best that day

I ran into a fellow in a dog town in Wyoming about 25 years ago who had a Cadillac Coup Deville with a sun roof. He would stand up and shoot out of the sun roof while his wife drove him around. You might consider something like that. See if you can find one that's tan in color. It matches the surrounding grass.

The only badger I ever saw was also in eastern Oregon. I shot it with a 223 40 BT from 70 yards before I knew just what it was, but I knew it was a varmint anyway. When I got back to NV my buddy asked "Where's the pelt?" It never occurred to me to skin it out. My Peterson Field Guide says "fur of little value".

I had a 4 dr Wrangler for some time. I removed the back seats, bought a chunk of 3" foam to cover the entire floor and I had all kinds of room.

My cousin in North Idaho has removable rear triangle tracks for his full-size 4x4 pickup. Mattracks or similar, not sure of the brand. Good for snow, probably not so great for mud.

I like my 2001 Dodge Cummins HO with the 6 speed manual, gets great mileage and comfortable. I bought my wife the Toyota FJ Cruiser she wanted and it has been a great vehicle. Its very utilitarian, it has vinyl/rubber floors with carpet mats, water resistant seats, its made to use outdoors/ 4 wheeling and not get ruined. Its made for easy clean up.The rear seat tumble folds all the way forward and has lots of room, even with the rear seat in place. Real 4 wheel drive, manual 2 speed transfer case not electrical shift. It is a ladder box frame like the a truck, not a unibody like the wannabe suv/mini van type vehicles. A locker in the rear and lots of room, I couldn't believe how much room it has. And the ride is nicer than the fully loaded Sequoia or Highlander. I would buy another in a heartbeat.

My one shooting buddy had Ford's his whole life. He leases a new one every other year. He went and checked and found out he could lease a new Chevy a lot cheaper. They even gave him a reduced rate for switching brands. He said he likes it alot better, better ride and way better gas milage.. He gets 23 MPG. My son in law bought a new one also and gets 22 MPG. I have a 2015 Tacoma and only get 17 MPG. Another shooting buddy bought a new Colorado and gets 27 MPG. I see I bought the wrong truck. Matt

i gave the Tacoma a thought, but after talking to 1/2 dozen owners not one praised fuel mileage, most said approx 14-16mpg on either the 4 or the v6, but yet i have a 06 Toyota Matrix and it goes beyond 30mpg over the road, i am curious about that Chevy Colorado you mentioned that is getting around 27MPG is the 200hp 4cyl or a V6 manual or auto

My 2016 Tacoma (3.5L V6 4x4 DC) gets 21-22 mpg running around the high desert, 19-20 mpg at 65-70 mph on the highway, and 17-18 mpg at 80 mph on the interstate in the mountains. Best jackrabbit hawking and coyote shooting rig that I've ever had.

I'm on my 8th jeep now, the current mountain/hunting rig was pretty straight when i got it but i was able to fix that with just a little work and a few trees and stumps and rocks. This one is a 2001 grand Cherokee 4.0 six with select-trac transfer case and 3.55 gears. That is the key to the 26.3 mpg on the freeway and 18 around town, 16-18 off road. It isn't the most powerful engine but is the best combo i have found for both freeway and dirt in the mountains/deserts of the west. It does have a 2" lift on it.
I loved my f-250 4x4 but it kept spilling my drinks when off road, the WJ is much smoother and a better place to sleep.
