260 Rem with HDY ELD-M 147gr

I got a new rifle in 260 Rem., it's Barnard action with 32" bbl.

Anyone tried 260R with ELD-M 147gr. powered by H4831SC? Any (good) experience is appreciated. Thx.

Have not used 4831sc but have tried several other powders. Best results with rl26. Use a long drop tube and you can get top velocity and less than 0.5moa. My buddy uses h4831 SC in his 260 ackley and I can almost equal his velocity in my standard 260 using the rl26. His loads are heavily compressed.

You will need a lot of freebore with this bullet in order to get them seated far enough out. I tried them in my std 260 chamber seated 25 thousands off the lands. Using my normal 140 load of 42.5 h4350 the blew primers. If I had to back off to say 41 gn h4350 they would not shoot as well in the wind as my 140 hybrid load at 1000. I sold the remaining box

It was a nice experiment

Mama's didnt like the Rl26 so much, went with 46 gr Rl22 pushing 143eldx 2650 fps.
She has short barrel of 20".
Which reminds me I have 120 eldm's, and 120 bergers loaded up to test. Wanting higher velocity for deer hunting.

You are right about the freebore. I have 0.165 plus the leade. They are still deep in the case with an oal of 2.89".

My F Class Gilles/Ross with a 30in Krieger loves moly 142 SMK’s pushed by 44.5 grs of H-4831sc. I found it’s not the fastest load or powder I’ve tried but it was the most accurate.

I shoot them in a 6.5 creedmoor with 4350. 42.8 grains of it. It is a compressed load. Cant get enough 4350 in my case to be concerned about pressure. they are going at 2840. So far, they shoot very well. No issues with fliers.

I shoot 147s out of my 260 with a 30" barrel @2800 fps with IMR 4451. Performs well.

I've measured 2.913" today for HDY ELD-M 147gr in my chamber.

That is almost the same as my chamber which measures 2.915 to touch with the 147 eld-ms. Here is some of my load data with rl26: case capacity of lapua brass 55.1 gr.
Loads are seated 2.89 off .025.
43gr 2693, 44 @2742, 45 @2804, 46@2846
This about all the powder I can get in using a long drop tube and vibration. Even with that it pretty heavily compressed. No case head expansion or pressure signs on brass. You need case neck tension to keep these loads from lengthening. Accuracy slightly less tham 0.3moa with the 46 gr load. All loads single shot from sa r700 and 30" Krieger 8tw barrel.
Do not have any 4831sc loads but case holds 0.5 gr less powder than rl 26 or h4350. My best load overall is with smk 142s and 42.5gr h4350 @ 2919 loaded to 2.87 and 0.23 moa.
There may be a sa magazine that allows 2.95 length (can't recall). These long overall lengths may require grooving your reciever.
Berger 140s and smks both shoot over 2900 in a long barrel so don't overlook them.

I have virgin Peterson Match brass, loaded neck has 0.2933". I have prepared few loads with H4831SC and Reload Swiss RS 62 (similar to Alliant RL16). Will see tomorrow at the range...

I found rl16 to be too bulky and could not get enough in the case. Loads were very inferior to h4350. Also, I do not know much about Peterson brass and the internal capacity of the cases.
It will be interesting to see your range results.

I tried four loads with the H4831SC from 41.5gr up to 43.0gr.. Chrono'ed with LabRadar, velocity 2640 to 2715. Best 5-shot group at 300 meter measured 0.53 MOA with 2695 fps. Not very accurate, not very fast...
Other three loads with the Reload Swiss RS62 41,5-42.5gr. were more promising. Velocity from 2805 to 2845. Best 5-shot group at 300 meter was slightly under 0.3MOA (0.27 MOA exactly), with 2824 fps. I will repeat the load and see if I found some sweet spot.
The bullet was jumped only 0.004".
I'll test more and I also have to check the Peterson brass capacity after the first firing.

Any pressure signs with your RS62 Loads? How much more can you get in the case and still seat the bullet?
That 0.27 moa is quite good. Interesting that I have the same moa with my smk 142 load at 2920fps using h4350.You might be at or very close to your load. 0.27moa with the 147
at 2824 will put you in the game. What type shooting are preparing for?

Very interesting. Sounds like you are an early adopter. Do you have access to Berger or Sierra bullets? They are more widely used here than Hornady. The 284 is the most popular cartridge but you can really increase your skills with the .260. It and the ackley variations can be pretty competitive. The 6.5-284 was king of the hill but low barrel life made shooters look for something else. The 284 with high bc Berger bullets seems to be a very good compromise.

The most important thing you can do is to learn reading the wind. It will usually place high in the match. Those high bc bullets are about less wind deflection in a wind misread. Vertical is not the problem with accurate low sd loads.
Rapid strings in fclass do wear the barrel much faster.
