Gentlemen, I present... the ".220 REDLINE"

Fredo, that's sick! You're my hero.

Nice work!
I have made that shot several times over the years with a Swift or 22-250. I can tell you never did it spin a chuck off its feet. And that particular shot is TOUGH due to undulating field, several unseen dips that carry some crazy winds switches in there, and mirage. Heck of a shot. Can't wait to see ol 700 yarder!

For reference, the fenceline at the top is about 750 yards....gives some idea of how not only the video, but the landscape there is disorienting...there are numerous little swales that run in that field and by "observation" what may look like 25 yards difference is 125. It takes a good rangefinder and serious study to shoot this farm with regular success. I have notes from as far back at 1996 talking about "holds' in various conditions, time of day etc. If I ever had to hold off the varmint horde charge, i would do ok, on this place!! I refer to this place as "the farm God gave me to show His goodness". No doubt.

This is a great shot. Ya, I said it again.

P, I know the rolling terrain on that farm did take some gettin' used to!

OK GENTS, here's the 737yd video :)
Did some basic editing to 'slo-down' the vaportrail & impact, not gonna get much more fancy than that...
(select 720P HD for better res)

The Redline made the Deadline!!! Nice shooting..

Fredo
From the start this thread has be interesting, informative, and now entertaining !!
The rifle looks great ! And the performance looks even better!
Congratulations WELL DONE !!
Looking forward to future Post's
Shoebox

Cheers, fellas!

BTW...
My buddy Dave got Part 2 of my .220REDLINE write up posted up on his blog. Basically, it's a synopsis of what y'all have been privy to in this thread...

Lotsa cool stuff on Daves blog, too! Certainly humbled that he allowed this little project to be a part of it!

Be sure to take especially good care of all the "Moms" in your lives, today!!!

Darn shame old Blaine Eddy's not still around to read this. You and him woulda' chewed the fat on this stuff, no doubt! Haven't read through it all lately Fred, but have you tried any of the bigger polymer-tips yet maybe up to the 80 ELD-M?

Reckon so, Steve!

After getting the published (unstable) results with the 80Amax, I didn't bother with any other 80grainer. One might surmise that the 1:9 might work in your AO with 80s, or that a more sleek 80VLD or 80.5FB may stabilize adequately in mine, but just don't t think imma mess with them again. And especially so, seeing how fast the 75s are crankin'...

Which goes back to initial concerns I had about barrel twist, and bullet stabilization without damage. Given the performance I've documented, stepping up to a faster twist would not have been wise! Looking back now, a 1:8.5 could be the ticket for 80s, BUT...that re-introduces the potential for excessive RPM and bullet integrity issues (blow ups)...

If I were to step UP in bullet weight, that decision would be solely based upon reaping a tangible benefit in ballistic performance. In short, that heavier (80gr) bullet has to run fast enough to make the b.c. do the work to beat the lighter (75gr) bullet I'm already running. Otherwise, it ain't worth it!

All that said, by staying with a 1:9, I'm not unduly stressing a 75 (~318,000 rpm @ 3970fps) and getting more velocity than I even hoped for! Whereas, a 1:8.5 would likely eat up some of that precious 'hotrod' velocity, and add 20,000+MORE rpm for that loss. WIN/win vs. LOSE/lose...

That's the balancing act, in a nutshell! Now I just gotta see how long it takes to torch this sucka...

Little P says she will help you do barrel longevity testing....

Fred, how about the 77 TMKs ? I know they don't match the BCs of hornadys Amax/ELDs but the TMKs sure do shoot well in my guns. Hornadys do as well and of course Hornadys are cheap. Just curious.

John, I've got the 69TMKs to fall back on, and those 77s might be worth a crack, too. Figured I'd keep them in reserve for the inevitable time when a JLK/VLD might not survive the trip, downrange...

Those thick jacketed Sierras might eeek another few useable rounds from this barrel, as they have in many others shooters' rifles...

Love this thread Fredo and was just thinking about the only way for me that it could get even better was if you happened upon a crow.I think a video of some black feathers raining down for awhile would be the bees knees.Perhaps seeing the havoc the Redline does to a coyote this fall would be nice too.;)

Well guys...tough time of year to pop chucks! Grass is knee high in most spots, gonna be another week or three till first cutting is done. Sure hoping to get together with my pal, snert, and spend some time watching the dandelions sprout while waiting for that sneaky little brown bean to pop outta a hole...

In the meantime, I tested an APA Microbastard brake on the REDLINE. It shaves the recoil right down to minimal... but DANG ITS LOOOUUUDDD!!! And, that sucka belches some flames out da sides  The grass was actually smoking on either side of the muzzle...

POI shift @100yds with brake was 0.3mil left, vs. without.

All good, from here on out! Will burn up these few hundred 75JLKS, then whip up a load with a TSX in time for deer schwackin'. Dunno if a TMK or VLD will perform (hold together) on a deer at such extreme impact velocity? I know some old time govt hunters who killed all manner of critter (larger and small) with 80SMKs from 22-243s, but the REDLINE allows 400-500fps in MV. That could very well turn a good killing bullet into a 'splash-o-magic'. Sure don't wanna make a mess of venison procurement, if its avoidable!

Will see how things go. Heck, for all I know, this barrel might be a tomato stake by November! :)

instead of the TSX, maybe think about the GMX. As I understand it, the GMX is made from the gilding metal and would be a fair amount tougher than the TSX. Might be a necessary step to take since your impact velocity could still be very high. I've had the petals of a TSX break off with my 25-06 at around 3000fps impact vel.

Been fishing too much (if that's even possible?), and fields growed up above the knee, so haven't missed much by being in the water...

Snert mentioned some intel about recent cutting, so might be worth a road trip to get the REDLINE back in action? Weather permitting, of course! As of today, looking like a WET weekend...

Don't worry! The REDLINE will be on call, exclusively, all the way through deer season

Looking forward to throwing an 80 Amax at whitetail with my newest gun project as well. Thinking it will prove to do the job required. Speaking of fishing, headed out to Stannard Rock in the middle of Lake Superior to jig for some monster Lakers this Saturday. Beautiful weather for it over here.
