barrel cooling

I was reading the article about Jeff Cochern from TX. In it he says he cools his barrwl after a string by soaking a towel with water and putting the towel on the barrel.

Any else ever do this? seems like a good idea. his results speak for themself.

When we had our F Class group going a few years back, I did exactly the same thing. Soaked a towel, kept it in a cooler with ice packs and wrapped it around the barrel between matches. Barlow

We've been doing the wet towel thing for over 20 years during hot rat shoots here. Seems to work well, especially cooling the hot chamber area of the barrel after a nice string of launching rats skyward.

Tried the Co2 thing too, but the towel thing is cheaper, less bulk to haul about, and water is always available. Nuthin' fancy, it just works. ;)

Thanks. Ive not seen anyone do it up here in the north east, and ee get high 90s even an occasional tripple diget tems during mid summer matches.

We do that on a regular basis. I live in Phoenix Arizona, When we practice in the summer the temp can be 85 degrees at 7:00 and go to 110 by noon. That towel knocks the temp down pretty quick but you need to be careful and re-stabilize the temperature. The towel does not cool the barrel uniformly. I have taken a hand held laser temperature gun/guage and got different reading on different parts of the barrel, sometimes as much as 40 degrees.

I use the "ice packs" they sell at the Walgreens. The cloth covered one you're supposed to wrap around your shoulder or ankle. Aw heck, here ya go.....

I use a mini cooler filled with ice, water and a couple towels. Pulls out the heat fast. In the winter, I remove the bolt and stand the rifle up in the rack. Gives it the chimney effect and cools off faster than just sitting in the rests.

I like that u still have a land line....means ur old....really really old. :D:eek::D:eek:
Heck, I thought that phone was high tech. You can pick it up out of that cradle and walk into the bathroom with it and it still works! No wires or nothin!!:):):):):) It don't work in the shower, tho. I had to get a new one after I did that, once.:confused::eek::eek::oops: I'm not that old! I have a cell phone that works in the shower!

I use a small air pump and a 12v battery pack. In 90° weather I can usually fire a round every minute and the barrel will never get too hot to hold. 45 seconds with air blowing down the barrel from the chamber cools as well as 8-10 minutes with the barrel facing up and the bolt open.

My buddy took a bore guide and attached it to a plastic pump siphon. Cooler jug full of ice cold water and pump it thru the barrel. Watched him do it many a time while we was prairie dog hunting.
