17 Hornet brass

Just curious if anyone has heard any rumors or rumbling in the industry about any potential brass makers for 17 Hornet besides Hornady?

Federal makes it also but doesn’t sell it in bulk that i know of. Hornady is pretty good. This caliber is not a 6br

Good to know. I wasn't sure if their factory ammo was re-branded Hornady brass or actually Federal. Hopefully someone else gets in the game. If for nothing else than to bring prices down.

All I can say is do not buy Hornaday ammo in hopes of getting some brass. Hornaday factory ammo has a crimp in the primer pocket..

This is a piece of factory new ammo out of box of Hornady Superformance 17 Hornet 20gr Vmax. Help me learn something, how/where is there a crimp on the primer or around the primer pocket? Not looking to argue about it but what am I not seeing?17 Hornet new ammo.jpg

De-prime one and try to seat a new primer.. You'll see what is being discussed..

That's the thing, I have and there was no issue so I'm still a little confused on what the problem is. What am I missing?
Maybe Hornaday has addressed this issue. All my brass from my Hornaday factory ammo has been tossed in the trash. The brass that they sell has no problems.. It's the loaded factory ammo that I had a problem with. I haven't bought any for quite a while so maybe the issue is moot. I am not going to buy ammo just to see.

I recall reading something about the earlier 17 Hornet ammo and problems with it. I don't exactly remember what the deal was with it but if I recall the problem ammo could be identified by its silver colored primers, or something like that.

All the factory ammo I have - both 20g Vmax and 25g HP - look like B23s. I'm still shooting them up so I have brass to reload with, but I hope I don't find any staked/crimped primer pockets. That's sure a bummer that you did.

Be nice to see someone like SIG or Nosler churn out some .17 Hornet brass. Just too small of a market I guess.

Midway has 17 Hornet Superperformance for less than $16 a box right now on sale. Hopefully it can be reloaded, but that is a pretty good deal. $0.10 more than their empty cases....per round.

I haven't had any trouble reloading the Hornady Superformance ammo I've shot and for me, it doesn't make a lot of sense to buy new brass that cost nearly as much as their loaded ammo so that's the direction I've been going with my two 17 Hornets.

Hornady had some bad brass at the start. Primer pockets were tapered and you couldn't reload once fired factory ammo. I never heard that Hornady put a crimp on them but I wouldn't put it past them.

I got tired of the high prices of the Hornady brass and opted to buy a 1,000-count bag of Winchester .22 Hornet brass - then worked it to .17. I bought it either at Midsouth or Natchez. Can't recall - but it was inexpensive and good stuff, especially after turning the necks..

I wish I had the time and patience to go that route, but no thanks. Suppose I'll keep buying factory ammo for reloads and hope that someone else besides Hornady will eventually start making 17 Hornet brass.
