FX-120I price increase fyi

I believe I ordered Saturday, got notification on Sunday, tracking shows it due to me on Tuesday! Emailed Cambridge on Monday and asked for a copy of my invoice to email in for the rebate, they had the copy back to me within a couple of hours, sent everything off so it should all be good to go.
received my scale monday 27th gotta mail in the rebate

Got mine today, unpacked it and all I can say so far is wow! Going to set it up and compair it to my Dillon D-terminator that I’ve been using for the last ten years or so, been a great scale (I think), be interesting to see how my loads have compaired! Have my calendar marked for 6-weeks to be on the lookout for the rebate, said 6-8 weeks so we’ll see.

yeah emailed my rebate a little bit ago. This is a way better scale than anything ive had so it should be interesting.

Sure ain't gonna sell my Chargemaster, though! Although I drank the Koolaid & can appreciate the precision of the A&D/thrower for a dumpin' a given charge weight, looks like it'd be a PITA for load testing with varying charge weights. For that task, the ease of use of the Chargemaster still makes good sense...

I have adopted Erik Cortina's velocity based load development method so now I weigh my test loads to the kernel on my modified beam so I can throw my charges and not be worried about if the charge is + or - .1 grains. If I am firing three rounds to find the velocity at 24.1 I want all three to be at 24.1. Not 1 at 24.0 , 1 at 24.1, and the third at 24.2. If you can be certain there will be less than 10 or 15 fps ES over that 24.0 to 24.2 spread it gives a lot of leeway for measuring using a powder throw or a CM to load 80 or 100 rounds

Just ordered mine to upgrade the Gempro (although my GP works perfectly fine). Been looking at the FX120 for a while now. The link from CE products is definitely the best price I've seen.

So I ordered the whole kit ( scale, trickler and thrower) 2 weeks ago to replace my Gempro and UPS is going to drop it off this Friday. Looking forward to speeding up the powder charging portion. Being impatient is not cheap!!! I was on some other site doing more research on this FX-120I and someone mentioned that you should leave a calibration weight on the scale when it is not in use because of the kind of scale it is. Has anyone been doing this? for the folks who use this scale, what is your start up procedure? Do I need to have it on for a certain amount of time before using? Any and all advice is greatly appreciated.

No...do not need to do that.

I have a Sartorious but the procedure would be the same. I plug it in, let it warm-up/acclimate to the room's temperature for 30 minutes (per manufacturer's recs). When first positioned/levelled I run a calibration with a 50 gm weight. No true need to recalibrate unless the scale is moved/ re-leveled; I do periodically re-calibrate even if I did not move the scale just to justify spending the $$ on the weight:) and for Justin. (you all know that dude that shows up just to put a stick in your spokes...ALWAYS be prepared for Mr. Case...Justin Case)

I was thinking about getting a Grade A machinist granite surface plate to mount the scale on. Anyone else doing this? I figure the hardness and cosistency of the granite should help the scale to maintain consistent accuracy

Get one if you want, but as long as you have a sturdy bench top, you should be good. My bench top is 3/4" birch ply and the scale is steady. You may find that air current is more of an issue, just depends on your reloading room environment. Try it out first and go from there.

I had a granite bench made just for the scale with vibration dampening leveling feet. It looks really great;)...and not necessary....but in reality hrlincoln hit the nail on the head...any level sturdy bench will do. Air currents can be a bit of a nuisance. One thing about the scale platform....it is ideal to have a separate bench/sturdy shelf that is not coupled with the bench that the press is on if you are seating bullets while it is throwing and weighing charges as the vibration can cause overthrows if kernels are jarred from the trickler 'screw'. My scale platform stands alone next to my bench.

I ordered my combo on the 8th and it finally arrived today. The unit was very well packed and setup was fast and easy but I don't have the correct external calibration weight; I have 20gram weights but I need a good 100gram weight. Apparently I can use "internal mass" but I'll still need that external weight to ensure accuracy. :(

ETA - Holy cow, a US made F1 class 100gram weight is $107!

Thanks guys. The new work bench I built this last weekend has a 1.5" thick top and is 4 ft x 8 ft (2 stacked full sheets of 3/4" solid plywood). Extremely sturdy. My Gempro is sensitive to air currents as well because it has the same resolution as the fx120i. My ceiling heater will mess with it so I usually shut it down when weighing charges. Other than the heater messing up readings, I have nothing else to worry about.

Just thought maybe a slab of granite would be nice because then I could have the scale legs screwed all the way in tight for maximum stability then level the scale by shimming the corners of the granite.

I have some thick aluminum plates I could probably use too. I just like the weight of the granite.

Check on ebay, do a search for used calibration weights and you can find stuff at pretty reasonable prices. I bought a Troemner ASTM Class 1 50g weight, appears to be surplus from a lab. Comes with serial number, hard case, etc. They had it listed for $38 and I made an offer of $30 which they accepted, free shipping too. There was a pair of them and one is still available.

ASTM Class 1 is way better than the cheap calibration weights you can buy. They are rated to be 50g plus or minus 0.00012g (or to put in another measurement, plus or minus the weight of 2.5 fingerprints). The cheap ones are OIML M2 rating which would be 50g plus or minus 0.01g.

Well I ordered a machinist grade 'A' granite surface plate 9"W x 12"L and 2" thick. Should give a nice ultra flat solid suface to help ensure the scale does what it's supposed to do ;)

.....Should get one for my Chargemaster too.
