What's your favorite varmint rifle?

I need to get a pic of mine. I have a 22 Varminter built by Hervey Lovell and stocked by J B McCament. It was built on a mauser receiver and a Buhmiller barrel.

Yes, old blue steel and walnut? Photos please. Love those old rifles.

Never taken the time to photograph it yet. The rifle was built fo Mr. McClament and I have a couple letters that came with it from Lovell to McCament.
Letters were post dated 1941 and were from Indianapolis to McMament in Texas City, Texas. Kinda funny, it made it to McMament with the only address on the envelope was Texas City, Texas.
Lovell said bushing firing pin was $3., installing new extractor was $3., custom seater and sizer were $8 for the pair, $3 for bluing the rifle, and cases necked and formed for his 22HP were $3.78 per 100.
Neat letters from Feb. and March of 1941.

Ruger VHZ 17 Hornet, 4-24x50 Burris signature select with the dusk and dawn aperture.

I love this gun. I did have to do some tweaks, I shimmed the bolt and trigger, polished the sear and free-floated the barrel. Right in the warranty it says if you remove the pressure point on the forearm you will void the warranty. Well I chose to have a gun that shot tight groups over one that didn't but has a warranty.

This thing is nasty on ground squirrels and Rock Chuck's. I do like the 25 grain Bullets over the 20's, they do more damage.

Tikka T3x Varmint or Super Varmint in just about any of the intermediate and smaller centerfire cartridges. Just so damn reliable and highly accurate.

I guess I can't spell and it appears that I can't edit the post. McCammet is the correct spelling.

Not a spell check problem, the edit icon is no longer there.

I just use the backspace key and fix what i need. Spell check will disagreement at times but finally relents to my spelling.

I know when you went to school they taught spelling.. Not certain about this day and age.

Go to a post that is a day or two old and try to edit. The edit icon goes away. I understand that I can edit while posting or can edit my post for a short while after posting it, but not yesterday's post.

I still want a photo!

I will try to find a photo of the PIG, a 220 i shoot. it isn't pretty, but it sure is fun

That’s so weird. How did you come across a rifle like that? I’m sure it’s one of a kind. Is the sling taped to the barrel?? How does it shoot???

I lived in Central NY which has a long history of benchrest and gunsmiths. (Think Sherman, Hart, Walker, Shilen etc). Friend was interested in a groundhog gun. This showed up in the 90's in the local swap sheet. Advertised as 220 Swallow, big scope, $200. o_O When I called kid said it had been Uncle Fester's gun...or someone like that. We looked at it, buddy bought it with a 20X Lyman AA on it. After several years of groups in the .75 range, i bought it for $400. I just knew I could get it to shoot so I sold the scope for 200 bucks and threw my old T on it. I learned that it would shoot under .5 for about 15 shots if you got it dirty..about 8 rounds, and kept it dirty, but not over 25-30 rounds. Clean it and it shot awful...which is what happened to us early on because we were cleaning, shooting, testing, cleaning. It has a rough bore, a lot of "leade" and it has killed groundhogs at almost 700 yards with that T10 and crows at 550. It is funky because it is cock on close and has a plunger like pin fall. KERTHUNK. But it is so much fun I will never sell it. And the sling is a shotgun sling because the bottom edge of the butt stock is real thin on the bottom and i cannot get a stud in it, so the barrel end is duct taped on! Ya, harmonics...I have to re-apply tape every few years and re-sight in! (I am kidding, really!)

From yesteryear. As mentioned earlier it was built by H. Lovell for stockmaker McCammet, in 1941. Some of you old timers might remember or heard of the 2R lovell cartridge and others that Lovell was responsible for.

26" barrel with a .950 diameter at the muzzle.
It could be yours at a nominal price.

My favorite lately is my old Ruger 77, 257AI with a new Rock Creek 1 in 9 twist. I've shot a coyote and a crow lately and I can testify to the fact that an 87gr Hornady at 3600 mv is a bullet of mass destruction. I may have to go back to 100 grainers. Barlow
